Strategic goal #4: Focus on equity and diversity
[edit]Encourage and support diverse participation from New Zealanders of all backgrounds, cultures and perspectives, with a focus on under-represented communities, and with a particular focus on Māori and Te Tiriti.
We will engage appropriately with Māori, seeking collaborative partnerships to understand and develop activities that strive to decolonise content on Wikimedia Foundation Projects, with Māori involved and leading in a way that works for them.
WANZ will work with the Māori community, seeking engagement that will enable and improve coverage of Te Ao Māori on Wikimedia platforms if the Māori community sees that as appropriate.
We will reach out again to the Pasifika community to build on our previous work.
As a group of predominantly Pākehā English-speakers, WANZ is not in a position to assess the suitability of Te Mātāpunenga Wātea | Māori Wikipedia as a tool for sharing Mātauranga Māori or te reo Māori. Should a group emerge who are in a position to make that assessment and commit to using Te Mātāpunenga Wātea | Māori Wikipedia, WANZ would provide support and resources.
Objectives/Key Actions
[edit]- Develop a strategy for engagement with Māori and Te Tiriti to ensure knowledge equity in a way that supports Māori data sovereignty and Māori data governance.
- Identify priority areas for closing content gaps about Te Ao Māori and removing colonial bias.
- Support volunteers to identify and address knowledge gaps in local history, women, LGBTQIA+, minority groups by developing a list of priority topics, and engaging with the relevant community.
- Partner with Māori and seek ways of improving content in WMF platforms about Te Ao Māori.
- Work with Māori and other under-represented groups to run events and activities that reflect and support diversity.
- Engage with Māori students through universities.
