Asistentes a Iberoconf 2013.

Presentations of the Education program

As part of the education program of Wikimedia Argentina, in October we did a new presentation that focused on Wikipedia as a tool in different education environments.

On Wednesday, October 2nd, Patricio Lorente presented Wikipedia is not alone: Everything you always wanted to know about Wikipedia, Wikimedia and the wiki world, at the headquarters of Iberoamerican Institute of ICT and Education (IBERTIC) in Buenos Aires. In this chance, Patricio went over the history of Wikipedia, its goals and current situation, the principles that inspire the project and the ways in which it can be used for academic purposes.

Wikimedia Argentina in Jujuy

Audience at the talk "Wikipedia and indigenous towns, in Libertador General San Martín, Jujuy province.

On Thursday, October 3rd, Osmar Valdebenito, executive director of our organization, did a presentation at Universidad Nacional de Jujuy about Wikipedia and universities: how to take advantage of the most popular tool in the world?. This presentation went through the writing skills needed to participate, as well as what it means to work in digital environments and through a wiki.

That same day, we visited Libertador General San Martín (Ledesma), 100 km far from the capitol city. In a presentation attended by 30 people, Osmar showcast the multilingual reality of Wikipedia and the many possibilities a community of indigenous inhabitants has to take part in the project. In this opportunity, the low level of participation of these communities was highlighted, that makes information partial and based only in academic references that perpetuate eurocentrism. This leaves out the viewpoint of the community. Several members of aboriginal communities in the vicinities, like guaraní and aymará people, took part in the talk, as well as the presentation carried out the following day in San Pedro de Jujuy. Many members of the guaraní community in that city attended the presentation and were very motivated to join the projects. We are looking forward to continue these efforts in the coming months.

The talk in San Pedro de Jujuy was declared of local interest by the town council, and it was followed by a Wikipedia workshop with students from a secondary school nearby. In this chance, the main characteristics of Wikipedia were shown, as well as some key procedures when editing and the rules of the community.

We took part in Iberoconf 2013, in Mexico City

Assistants to Iberoconf 2013

On October 15 and 14, the Third Iberoamerican Wikimedia Conference (Iberoconf) took place. In this meeting, the focus was on creating joint projects in Education, that promote Wikipedia and its sisters projects among students, teachers and researchers. The aim is to develop jointly videos, online courses and documents that reach all the region. During Iberoconf, it was also agreed to develop contests coordinated together by multiple chapters; as joint efforts that bring more collaborators online.

Iberoconf 2013 was also an opportunity to share education programs in the region. During the meeting, some of these were highlighted: Wikimedia Uruguay's Eduwiki; Brazil's Education project; Mexico's program, that has the National Autonomous University of Mexico as main partner. One of the proposed ideas was to develop together, among the chapters of the region, online courses that teach how to edit on Wikipedia and its sister projects.

Another milestone in this regional meeting was the creation of a volunteer group, aimed at adapting tools for the different wiki projects, that delivers data about the use of the projects, in an attempt to capitalize the accomplishments of Wikipedia and other wiki projects in the impact they have within society. In a workframe where results and metrics not only are a requisite for chapters, but also help to outline the growth options of the movement in a local level, a technical team could generate tools that make this data processing easier. As a first step to form this group, at Wikimedia Argentina we have organized the Wiki Hackathon.

Asaf Bartov and Jessie Wild took part in the meeting as representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation. Jessie Wild's presentation focused on the success evaluation processes of the different activities. Check out her presentation here.

This organization, that is taken as a reference by other chapters that are looking forward to unite their efforts, had a chance in this meeting to think through ways of organizing the cooperative work. In this trail of thought it was agreed to have a new figure in the organization: a coordinator that can follow up the projects that the chapters develop together in the region. The coordinator wil be a rotating person, with no political authority. This position will be fulfilled by Carmen Alcázar, from Wikimedia México, in the first few months. Read the official executive report here.

Wikimedia Argentina's General Meeting

First Creative Commons Toolkits Hackathon in Argentina

First Creative Commons Hackathon in Argentina.

On Sunday, October 13th Wikimedia Argentina took part in the First Creative Commons Hackathon in Argentina, an event that brought together programmer, designers, illustrators, copywriters and any person interested in sharing their knowledge to promote free licenses. During this day, we worked hard on building toolkits, to quickly induce and implement Creative Commons licenses.

The event was originated at Creative Commons Global Summit, which last edition was held in Buenos Aires. In that occassion, Billy Meinke and Teresa Sempere García presented the idea of producing toolkits to promote the meaning of using free licenses and its advantages. This action is framed in our idea of promotion of the "Wiki Culture", that spreads the values of our organization. CC Toolkits is an action plan promoted by Creative Commons Headquarters, that recently launched a second open call to continue this work.
