Preparation of a language guide: “Common mistakes”[edit]

To support Western Armenian Wikipedia editors and help them improve the quality of their edited articles, a language guide was prepared to highlight the common mistakes made by the editors and offer the correct way and explanations. The first guide focused on the most common mistakes made by Western Armenian editors under the influence of Eastern-Armenian (mostly during translating articles from Eastern-Armenian Wikipedia).

It is planned to organize online meetings/training sessions as of March 2019 to go through each common mistake and help editors avoid them.

Western Armenian edit-a-thon[edit]

The first Edit-a-thon of 2019, February 22-24, 2019

In continuation to the series of Western-Armenian Wikipedia edit-a-thons organized in the last four months of 2018, several similar events will be organized throughout this year, as well. The first edit-a-thon took place during the weekend of 22-24 February 2019.

Overall, 21 articles were edited (created and improved) by ten participating Western Armenian Wikipedia editors. It is worth noting that the Beirut WikiClub was especially active in contributing to the success of the edit-a-thon.

The edit-a-thon focused on improving the quality and language of several already existing articles, as well as offered the opportunity to create new articles on the monasteries in Western Armenia.

The next edit-a-thon is planned to organize in the second half of April. It is anticipated to generate topic suggestions from the Western Armenian Wikipedia community.

Workshop for Nor Hachn N1 school[edit]

In February Wikimedia Armenia received a request from Nor Hachn N1 school teacher of the social sciences - Larisa Harutyunyan to host the school’s student council as well as other students and their teachers at WMAM office.

Wikimedia Armenia staff introduced the guests Wikimedia Armenia, Wikimedia Movement and different Wikimedia projects. The students were interested in the editing process of the projects as well as how the online encyclopedia, wiktionary and wikisource work, and in general who can edit and check the edits, etc. The addressed questions found their answers and the students were invited to Saturday workshops conducted each week at WMAM office to take practical steps toward editing.

Edit-a-thon dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Hovhannes Toumanian[edit]

Wikimedia Armenia constantly develops new methods and events to make WikiClubs work more efficiently and exciting. Inter-WikiClub edit-a-thon was one of these events, organized at Wikimedia Armenia office with five participating WikiClub members.

On February 15-17, 2019, Wikimedia Armenia, within the frameworks of the "Bridge for CSOs" program of the AGBU and Eurasia Partnership Foundation, funded by the European Union, hosted an edit-at-hon dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Armenian poet Hovhannes Toumanian’s birthday. Three editors from the Alaverdi, Goris, Koghb, Vardenik and Spitak WikiClubs participated in the edit-a-thon. At the event, the participants improved the articles of Hovhannes Tumanyan's children in Wikipedia and proofread the great poet's works in Wikisource.

One of the distinguished features of this edit-a-thon was the way of organizing the editing process. It was done by groups, the participants read the provided materials and improved the articles in the group. The necessary materials were acquired within the cooperation between Wikimedia Armenia and Hovhannes Toumanian Museum. In two days the WikiClub students improved 3 articles and proofread around 100 pages.

To further develop wiki editing skills, students played "Structure of Articles" and "Free and Copyrighted Images" games. Another major feature of this edit-a-thon was the cultural education of participants through Wikipedia articles. The WikiClub students visited the Hovhannes Tumanyan Museum in Yerevan, where they got acquainted with the life and works of Hovhannes Toumanyan. The coordinators reported that the tour in the museum helped students to learn and understand better the writer's life and works. One of the students notes that "they take with them a piece of Tumanyan’s spirit." Wikimedia Armenia will continue holding similar edit-a-thons because the result and impressions from this one proved its effectiveness and impact on the students’ knowledge and education.

Presentation at YSLU[edit]

Wikimedia Armenia signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences and agreed to collaborate with the University on several directions aimed at integrating Wikimedia Projects into education and promoting open knowledge in Armenian. In the framework of the bilateral agreement with the Career Center of the University, Wikimedia Armenia will regularly have presentations for students of the University.

On February 20, 2019 we had the first presentation with participation of more than 20 students. An active discussion followed the presentation where we addressed important issues such as the active involvement of the community into editing, checking facts and participation in discussions on articles, use of their educational materials in the editing of Wikipedia and etc. Some of the students checked several articles on Armenian Wikipedia before coming to the presentation and were eager if they could improve those by using their previous research. We called them to join the workshops in our office every Saturday and make their contribution based on their student works where relevant.
