In the past 2 months 156 articles were written in Western Armenian. Most of them were written by the students who participated in the Summer Wikicamp 2015 in Beirut and Armenia, and the rest by other editors.

All these new articles were reviewed, edited and wikified by experienced editors, including the teachers of above mentioned students.

At this moment we have 3293 Western Armenian articles.

Wikipedia Education program stats[edit]

  • In November we had 8 students who created 25 articles, made 97 edits and contributed 154249 bytes to Western Armenian Wikipedia.
  • In December we had 22 students who created 206 articles, made 632 edits and contributed 2397838 bytes to Western Armenian Wikipedia.

Western Armenian articles on the main page of Armenian Wikipedia[edit]

There is a project on Armenian Wikipedia where experienced editors choose featured article of the day. This articles are chosen under certain conditions, which are:

  • Article style should be encyclopedic and follow the pillars of Wikipedia
  • Article should have at least 10 reliable sources, references
  • Article should have written from trusted sources
  • Article should have media corresponding to the text
  • Article should be at least 20KB

With the increasing number of Western Armenian articles, and with the invitation taken from the Wiki-community, Western Armenian WikiTeam began to propose suitable Western Armenian featured day articles to put them on the main page of Armenian Wikipedia.

Since 11 October, one day each week a featured article was chosen, which was previously reviewed and corrected by Wikipedia Education program member teachers. We share these articles on social networks in order to make them available for more people.

Winter WikiCamp 2016[edit]

The Winter WikiCamp 2016 Aghveran was a youth camp organized by Wikimedia Armenia on 6-10 January.

In the end of December on the basis of monthly editing statistics Lebanese-Armenian secondary schools' students were chosen to participate in the Winter WikiCamp 2016 Aghveran. 10 students were selected and invited to participate in this camp, who were accompanied by a Lebanese-Armenian teacher Vartan Tashjian. Two kind of lists were prepared for the camp․ One of them to write article from Eastern to Western Armenian, and the second one to translate the article from English to Western Armenian.

During 3 days of Winter WikiCamp by the efforts of Western Armenian students 115 article were edited (see stats below).

Participant Western Armenian students were greatly inspired by the camp, so when the students returned from the camp to their home country, they gathered around them a new group of participants who wanted to be part of this work․

Wikicamp wasn't just an ordinary event in life, but it was a new chapter for me, in which I was introduced to educational programs and most importantly it gave me confidence, great power and introduced me to many new friends, who are now not only friends but also became brothers and sisters to me.

— Assadour Basmajian

WikiCamp is a new experience for it's a chance to meet other people, self-develop and enrich Western Armenian language in the Internet.

Wikiclubs[edit]

The WikiClubs activities are well going on in Beirut's schools, where the students study and edit Western Armenian articles in their free time with the help of experienced Wikipedians.

Each editor has been understood that this activity acquire knowledge, especially improve their linguistic knowledge.

Before the Winter WikiCamp we had three WikiClubs:

  • Yeghishe Manukian national college
  • M. & H. Arslanian Djemaran college
  • Armenian Catholic St. Cross-Harpoian college

Now, the opening works of the fourth Wikiclub are underway. It is planned to open it in L. & S. Yakoubian national college by the imitative of WikiCamp participant students and the help of school directorate.

In these clubs regular workshops are organized and the number of involved students is growing.

January 15 is known as Wikipedia Day to Wikipedians. On 15 January 2016 all around the world the Wikipedia 15th anniversary is celebrated. This year the Eastern Armenian Wiki-community celebrated this event at Wikimedia office, Yerevan.

Encouraged by this event, the Lebanese-Armenian secondary school students and the teachers who are involved in this program have gathered and celebrated this event in Beirut, Lebanon.

Translator's corner[edit]

In this period we have also enriched the "Translator's corner" project by adding new articles to be translated from Eastern Armenian to Western Armenian.

In this period 118 sections were translated from Eastern Armenian. Like previous months this time as well the translators' work is guided and coordinated by the project coordinator who reviews the translations, wikifies them and adds reliable sources to them periodically.

We also work on involving new translators to the project (for example, students) who will enrich Western Armenian Wikipedia program with essential high quality content.
