Wikimedia Bandung Community

Wikimedia Bandung Community is a local community under Wikimedia Indonesia, consisting of volunteer contributors to various Wikimedia projects such as Sundanese Wikipedia, Sundanese Wiktionary, Sundanese Wikiquote, Sundanese Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. The community is not limited to individuals residing in Bandung but also includes members from other areas in West Java and Sundanese-speaking diaspora communities. Within the community, a liaison serves as a bridge between the community and Wikimedia Indonesia, as well as with external parties.

History

Wikimedia Bandung Community was established as a community on December 15, 2018, following an Indonesian-language WikiLatih training session held in Bandung in collaboration with the Lontar Community and volunteer trainers. The initiative aimed to provide a platform for contributors to Wikimedia projects based in Bandung and surrounding areas. Later, on March 24, 2019, after the WikiGap event held in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden in Bandung, Wikimedia Bandung, together with representatives from Wikimedia Indonesia, appointed a community coordinator to serve as a liaison between the community and Wikimedia Indonesia. This initiative coincided with the formation of two other regional Wikimedia communities—Padang and Yogyakarta—to ensure consistency across regions. Since then, Wikimedia Bandung has grown steadily, with an increasing number of members and a wider range of activities.

Projects

Wikimedia Bandung Community focuses on regional initiatives, particularly those aimed at preserving Sundanese language and culture. Key projects include:

Sundanese Wikipedia, launched on March 15, 2004.
Sundanese Wiktionary, launched on October 4, 2004.
Sundanese Wikiquote, established in 2007.
Sundanese Wikisource, launched on August 16, 2023.

Member

Wikimedia Bandung Community currently consists of over 100 volunteer contributors from various locations, including Bandung, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Sukabumi, Pangandaran, Depok, Tangerang, and even Malang. Among them, 15 are active members.

Activity

Monthly Meetings

Monthly meetings are a regular activity held by the Wikimedia Bandung Community, typically facilitated by a different meeting coordinator each month. These meetings usually cover evaluations of past activities and planning for upcoming programs, such as offline meetups (Temu Daring), WikiLatih training sessions, and community branding initiatives.

Offline Meetups (Kopi Darat)

Kopdar, or offline meetups, are gatherings where volunteers come together for collaborative editing sessions. Due to the pandemic, these meetings transitioned to virtual gatherings, referred to as Temu Daring. From 2019 to 2020, Wikimedia Bandung held monthly meetups, totaling approximately seven sessions between September 2019 and February 2020. During the 2020–2021 period, the community organized three virtual Temu Daring sessions.

WikiLatih

WikiLatih is an educational program by Wikimedia Indonesia designed to introduce Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, while providing training on proper and effective Wikipedia editing. Members of the Wikimedia Bandung Community frequently participate as volunteer trainers during WikiLatih sessions held in Bandung. The community has also initiated WikiLatih events in both Sundanese and Indonesian across various locations and institutions. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, all WikiLatih activities have been conducted online. Nevertheless, the community successfully organized the first-ever virtual WikiLatih in Sundanese in September 2021.

Achievements

WikiSora

WikiSora is a project that recorded 600 Sundanese audio entries through Lingualibre and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. The recorded audio result were then added to the Sundanese Wiktionary entry page. View the achievement of this project here.

Wiki Ragam Jajanan

Wiki Ragam Jajanan is a project documentation a variety of Indonesian snacks and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. The resulting photos include original photos, photos without backgrounds, and combined photos of various snacks. View the achievement of this project here.

WikiNaskah

WikiNaskah is a project that digitalization Sundanese scripts whose copyright had expired or were licensed under CC0 and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. The digitized mateial that was uploaded and entered into the Sundanese Wikisource will be processed as material for workshop activities, editing training, and competition. WikiAksara

WikiAksara is a project aimed at conducting a reading verification of two manuscripts written in the Cacarakan script on Wikipabukon, with a total of 54 pages. In detail, each member is responsible for completing 8–9 pages (a total of 25 pages) from the manuscript Wawacan Cariyos Ali Muhtar, and 9–10 pages (a total of 29 pages) from the manuscript Wawacan Seca Nala.

WikiAksara II

WikiAksara II is a project continuation of the Cacarakan Sundanese script translation and translation initiative. This initiative utilizes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to assist with text verification, but human accuracy is still required to ensure the authenticity and quality of the manuscripts. Results of the Warnasari Manuscript Reading Test Volume 1 (Wikibooks), Transliteration of the Warnasari Manuscript Volume 1 (Sundanese Wikibooks Incubator), Translation of the Warnasari Manuscript Volume 1 (Indonesian Wikibooks).

WikiRenjana

WikiRenjana is a project to write 100 Sundanese recipes and snacks through Wikibooks. View the achievement of this project here

WikiCagarBudaya

Wiki Cagar Budaya and Wiki Cagar Budaya 2.0 are projects documentation of cultural heritage buildings in West Java, which includes 5 districts or cities such as Bandung, Cimahi, Cirebon, Purwakarta, and Majalengka. The result of uploading photos is inserted into Indonesian and Sundanese Wikipedia articles. In addition, data information regarding cultural heritage is added to Wikidata. WikiTutuwuhan

WikiTutuwuhan is a project inventory and documentation project of both local and alien plant species which is a collection of Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda (Bandung), Kebun Raya Cibodas (Cianjur), dan Taman Bunga Nusantara (Cianjur). Then, added information about the plant through articles on Sundanese Wikipedia. WikiCitaRasa

WikiCitaRasa is a project to write Indonesian recipes on Wikibooks Indonesia by utilizing freely licensed sources (public domain) from Wikisource Indonesia. This project is a continuation of the WikiRenjana project, involving contributions from a wider range of volunteers through training activities. View the achievement of this project here.

WikiPRESTASI

WikiPRESTASI is a project to transliterate and translate Cacarakan or Sundanese scripts. It also involves introducing Cacarakan or Sundanese scripts through editing training activities on Sundanese Wiktionary and by contributing transliteration results (text editions) to Sundanese Wikibooks.
