In the first half of 2025, Wikimedia Brasil launched an outreach program targeting research centers, reinforcing its commitment to advancing Open Science in the country. A partnership was established with the Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) at the University of São Paulo[1]f, focusing on editing and creating entries related to the center's work in the Social Sciences. The initiative included a dedicated training workshop for researchers and the development of an educational campaign, which has since been extended due to its strong relevance and impact. The program aligns with WMB's strategic goal of fostering and diversifying partnerships for free knowledge in Brazil and supports three UN Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education (SDG 4), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).

The collaboration resulted in substantial contributions to the Portuguese-language Wikimedia projects: 57 Wikipedia pages were edited, 21 new entries were created, and 35 images were added to Wikimedia Commons. Over 1,000 references were incorporated into relevant articles, which together accumulated more than 39,000 views.[2] Beyond the metrics, the initiative significantly strengthened ties between Wikimedia Brasil and academic institutions, broadening the representation of Brazilian scientific knowledge from diverse and local perspectives.

Ciência Aberta na Wiki Campaign

The Ciência Aberta na Wiki (Open Science on Wiki) campaign aimed at strengthening WMB's role in Brazil's open science movement, building on efforts since 2024 through events, partnerships, and resources that expand scientific dissemination via collaborative platforms. The initiative helped foster and diversify partnerships for open knowledge while promoting knowledge equity. Its objective was to make scientific research and data more accessible to society and to consolidate WMB's role as a central actor in open science within digital free-knowledge environments.

The campaign created a dedicated Wikiversity page that enabled universities, faculty, researchers, and the broader community to improve science-related content across multiple Wikimedia platforms. Qualitatively, it reached diverse audiences and encouraged plural uses of Wikimedia projects for scientific outreach. Quantitatively, across six participating programs, 70 editors contributed to improving or creating nearly 500 science articles on Portuguese Wikipedia and around 2,500 items on Wikidata.[3][4][5][6][7][8]
