Expanding access to scientific memory: the GLAM-Wiki partnership with Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz

Promotional video of the activities and partnership with Casa de Oswaldo Cruz

In May 2025, through the GLAM-Wiki partnership with Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, Wikimedia Brasil began uploading the personal book collection of Oswaldo Cruz to make it freely accessible through the Wikimedia platforms.[1] This collection, focused on the history of science and public health, was digitized by the institution and systematically uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The initiative directly contributes to expanding access to Brazil's scientific memory, with a total of 122 rare books and nearly 50,000 files made available, alongside the creation of more than 440 structured data items.[1]

This activity aligns with the chapter's strategic goal of fostering and diversifying partnerships for free knowledge in Brazil. It highlights the value of institutional collaboration to preserve and disseminate scientific heritage. Beyond quantitative results, the project strengthened ties with Fiocruz, deepened institutional engagement, and promoted the visibility of reliable historical sources.[2] The effort exemplifies how Wikimedia platforms can support the democratization of access to rare and culturally significant materials.[3]

My School, Our Heritage

In 2025, Wikimedia Brasil advanced its educational mission through the project Commons in the Classroom: Students Mapping Brazilian Heritage,[4][5] which mobilized students and teachers across some Brazilian cities to document and improve information about their local cultural and educational heritage. Responding to the new national restrictions on mobile device use in schools, the initiative demonstrated legally permitted pedagogical applications of smartphones by integrating them into heritage education, digital literacy, and collaborative knowledge production. Through a combination of training sessions, a Massive Open Online Course, and hands-on field activities, participants learned to photograph cultural sites, structure data on Wikidata, and contribute directly to Wikimedia Commons. The project engaged 139 registered students and teachers, trained 136 participants, and resulted in 5488 freely licensed photographs and structured data contributions,[6] expanding access to high-quality visual and contextual information about Brazil's historical schools and local memory institutions.[7][8][9][10][11]

This work aligns with global agendas for information integrity and safe digital environments, reinforcing commitments shared with UNESCO and the Global Digital Compact. By enabling communities to build public visual narratives rooted in their own territories, the project strengthened epistemic protagonism and civic belonging while enhancing the visibility of historically significant sites. It also contributed directly to SDG 4 by expanding learning opportunities and fostering critical engagement with cultural heritage. Beyond the quantitative metrics, the initiative showcased how Wikimedia platforms can support innovative teaching practices, reliable open educational resources, and the democratization of cultural knowledge in Brazil.
