Wikimedia CEE Hub/CEE Women Campaign 2026/report/Women Write Wiki

- By: Panpanchik
Within the framework of the project, I successfully organized two separate master classes/workshops for new users, three photowalks across Tashkent, and an edit-a-thon competition on Uzbek Wikipedia and Uzbek Wikiquote held from March 9 to April 9.
During the project, both female and male participants actively contributed equally. As a result, nearly 350 articles were created on Uzbek Wikipedia, more than 230 quote pages were created on Uzbek Wikiquote, and around 400 photographs were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as part of the project.
On May 2, the winners and the most active participants were awarded prizes in recognition of their contributions. The project was implemented on Uzbek Wikipedia, Uzbek Wikiquote, and Wikimedia Commons, and included the following activities:
- 2 workshops
- 3 photowalks across Tashkent
- Online edit-a-thons on Uzbek Wikipedia and Uzbek Wikiquote
- A final awarding ceremony
Below is a chronological overview of the events organized during the project:
- March 9 – April 9: Wikipedia Marathon
The Wikipedia Marathon was a month-long online editing campaign organized on Uzbek Wikipedia, aimed at increasing both the quantity and quality of articles related to women. Participants could take part in the marathon by creating new Wikipedia pages or improving existing ones.
- March 9 – April 9: Wikiquote Marathon
The Wikiquote Marathon was a month-long online editing campaign organized on Uzbek Wikiquote, focused on adding quotes related to women, as well as increasing the number and quality of quote pages. Participants contributed by creating new Wikiquote pages or improving existing content.
- March 14: Wikipedia Editing Workshop
A workshop was held on editing Wikipedia, adding references, working with templates, and creating new categories. The session was organized in collaboration with the TSUE Wiki Club.
- March 21: Navruz Photowalk in Tashkent
During a photowalk dedicated to the celebration of the Navruz holiday in Tashkent, participants photographed national costumes, traditional foods, and festive events. By collecting photographs and related information, participants enriched Wikimedia Commons with media documenting Uzbek culture and folklore.
- March 28: Wikiquote Practical Workshop
A practical workshop was organized on writing and editing articles on Uzbek Wikiquote, including working with reliable sources. Together with participants, a new article was created from scratch and formatted according to project guidelines.
During a photowalk organized at the State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan, participants photographed museum exhibits and collected information about them. The activity contributed to increasing the number of media files related to Uzbek culture and folklore on Wikimedia Commons.
A photowalk was organized at the house museums of Tamarakhonim, Oybek, and the first Uzbek female chemist Zarifa Saidnosirova in Tashkent. During the event, participants photographed museum exhibits and collected information about them, contributing to the number of freely accessible images related to Tamarakhonim and Zarifa Saidnosirova on Wikimedia Commons.
- May 2: Awarding Ceremony
During the awarding ceremony, the achievements and outcomes of the project were presented visually. Winners and active participants, as well as two individuals who provided valuable support throughout the project — Javoxir Yorqulov and Miss Kamola — were awarded certificates of appreciation and vouchers. At the end of the event, specially printed cookies were distributed, and participants celebrated together with sweets and refreshments.

Throughout the project, the following results were achieved:
- 341 Wikipedia articles created
- 234 Wikiquote pages created

Lessons Learned During the project, the effectiveness of working in a hybrid format was once again confirmed. The combination of online and offline activities proved useful in attracting participants from different regions and ensuring their active involvement. One of the project's biggest achievements was the successful use of my own social media channel, “viki_tiki”, as the primary platform for outreach and participant engagement. In addition, despite being the first project of this scale organized on Uzbek Wikiquote, the results exceeded expectations. The number of quote pages created and edits made by participants demonstrated the overall success of the initiative. Throughout the project, the competition among participants took place in a healthy and fair spirit. This increased participants’ motivation and contributed to the creation of higher-quality content. Another positive aspect was that certificates and vouchers were mailed to participants who could not attend the awarding ceremony in person. This reflected the organizers’ effort to ensure equal appreciation and recognition for all contributors. Working with students also proved to be highly effective and beneficial. Their ability to quickly learn new skills and their strong interest in Wikimedia projects significantly contributed to the success of the activities. Furthermore, the support of university wiki clubs played an important role in organizing events and attracting participants.
