What is the main goal of your project?
  • We aim to enhance motivation for collaboration efforts by building face-to-face relationships within the community. We hope to foster a sense of collaboration and division of labor.
Describe which activities you plan to implement
  • We are planning a trip to Kırklareli, a city about 200 km from Istanbul. This city has numerous historical and cultural monuments from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods that have not yet been photographed or documented on Wikipedia. As a team effort, we aim to photograph these cultural heritage sites, upload them to Wikimedia Commons under a free license, link them with Wikidata, and create Wikipedia pages for them.
Describe your team
  • We are planning to conduct fieldwork with a team of four people. This number may increase but cannot be reduced. All participants will be active members of the WM Turkey team.
For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
  • For nearly a year, we have been creating QIDs on Wikidata. The number of QIDs we have marked as cultural heritage across Turkey has reached 17,002. We are proud to showcase our work on a map: https://w.wiki/CqPL. We truly believe that this has been a significant effort.
  • The main cultural heritage sites we focus on include mosques, churches, bridges, caravanserais, baths, fountains, lighthouses, and all other historical cultural monuments we can think of. Our sole aim is to document and mark every cultural heritage site.
  • Thanks to the CEE Hub Microgrant programme, we are eager to capture photographs of these cultural heritage sites and further enrich our documentation efforts.

  • In Kırklareli, we have identified 157 historical monuments: [1]https://w.wiki/D7Eh. Our goal is to photograph as many of them as possible while maintaining our team's motivation and dedication.

Any additional comments or remarks about your project
  • I have been using OpenRefine for nearly a year to create QIDs on Wikidata for cultural heritage sites in Turkey. In collaboration with the local cultural inventory website www.kulturenvanteri.com, we have transferred 17,000 cultural heritage sites to Wikidata, with a goal of reaching 30,000. By integrating these sites into Wikidata, we contribute to the digitalization of knowledge and hope to facilitate the creation of Wikipedia pages in multiple languages. Even a historical monument in a small Anatolian village can gain international recognition through Wikipedia, which is truly inspiring.
  • I first joined Wikipedia 16 years ago, and for 4 years, I served as a Checkuser on Turkish Wikipedia. However, I stepped down to dedicate more time to my family. After the pandemic, I shifted my focus to Wikidata and Commons, where I continue to contribute actively. Additionally, I am an active contributor to OpenStreetMap.
  • I strongly believe in the widespread availability of freely licensed knowledge, photos, and videos. To support this goal, we are forming a small team to conduct a photography event in Kırklareli, and we would greatly appreciate your support in this endeavor. Happy editing!
