Project information
[edit]- What is the main goal of your project?
- The main goal of our project is to document cultural heritage exhibited in Tashkent museums by capturing original photographs and uploading them to Wikimedia Commons under a free license. These media files will be used to illustrate and enrich articles in the Wikimedia projects.
- Our team, consisting of four Wikimedians from Uzbekistan, plans to visit at least three major museums in one day, photograph notable artifacts and exhibits, and upload at least 100+ high-quality images.
- It will raise awareness of local cultural institutions and inspire other Wikimedians in Central Asia to contribute similar content about their heritage.
- Describe which activities you plan to implement
- We plan to carry out a one-day documentation trip in Tashkent, during which our team of four people will visit at least three museums. Each team member will have a specific role: taking high-quality photos of exhibits, collecting basic information (labels, dates, descriptions), and handling logistics.
- Before the visit, we will prepare all equipment (camera, batteries, storage) and confirm photography permissions with the museums. On the day of the trip, we will rent a car and move between the selected museums. We aim to capture a wide variety of cultural and historical objects, including artworks, artifacts, and museum interiors.
- After the visit, we will select the best images and upload them to Wikimedia Commons with accurate titles, descriptions, and categories. We will also enhance relevant articles across Wikimedia projects by adding these visuals and updating content. Additionally, we will improve or create Wikidata entries for the museums and key items documented.
- We expect to upload at least 100 freely licensed media files and improve at least 10 Wikimedia pages. This activity will contribute to making Central Asian cultural heritage more visible and accessible online.
- Describe your team
- Our team consists of four active Wikimedia contributors from Uzbekistan who will collaborate on this one-day documentation project.
- Muzaffar Turgunov – Project coordinator and uploader. Responsible for planning, communication, and uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons.
- Diyorbek 6504 – Photographer. Will use a DSLR or phone camera to take high-quality images of exhibits and museum interiors.
- Mahmud Abduvaliyev – Note taker and data collector. Will document exhibit information, including names, dates, and descriptions for later use.
- Nurjan01 – Driver and logistics manager. Will handle transportation, museum entry coordination, and general support.
- All four team members will also contribute to adding structured data, improving Wikimedia pages, and sharing the results with the broader community. We will work together to ensure the project is efficient, collaborative, and impactful.
- For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
- This project is primarily relevant to Wikimedia Commons, where we will upload original, freely licensed photographs of museum exhibits in Tashkent. These images will be used to illustrate articles across different Wikimedia projects, especially Wikipedia.
- The project is relevant to the CEE and Turkic-speaking Wikimedia communities, as there is currently a lack of visual content related to Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage.
- The target group includes:
- Wikimedia readers and editors looking for visual content on Uzbek museums and cultural artifacts;
- Local and regional editors who can use these images to enrich Wikipedia articles;
- The wider public interested in Central Asian history and culture.
- Do you have any metrics for the proposed grant proposal? If yes, please fill in the number of participants, editors, organisers and content contributions (Wikipedia articles, Wikimedia Commons images, Wikidata items, etc.)
- I have been an active contributor to Wikimedia projects. I have made over 7,000 edits on the Uzbek Wikipedia, more than 5,000 edits on the Kazakh Wikipedia, over 2,000 contributions to Wikidata, and uploaded more than 300 media files to Wikimedia Commons. My teammates are also active contributors to Wikimedia projects and regularly use and edit Wikipedia.
