Project information
[edit]- What is the main goal of your project?
- Today, the Kyrgyz language Wikipedia community is developing rapidly, and there are some activities for our volunteers to group and get a foothold in. On the other hand, the main activities could only target people from big cities, while young people from rural areas have no opportunities. And our main goal is to make our community bigger in quantity and quality. In fact, its progress has slowed. Until now, the few workshops on editing Wikipedia were held only in the capital, Bishkek, which is located in the northern part of the country. And our main goal is to organize a two-day workshop for young people in the southern cities of Osh, and Jalal-Abad which will be held in Jalal-Abad. In a workshop, young people learn how to contribute to Wikipedia in a clear and practical way. There is strong demand and interest among young people in these regions for such training, but there are few opportunities.
- Another important issue is the lack of content about southern Kyrgyzstan on the Kyrgyz Wikipedia. Many notable people from the South, historical buildings, streets, remote villages, and local culture are not in our Wikipedia. In addition, many existing articles need urgent updates. For example, population statistics in many articles are still based on outdated data from 2009. Through this project, we aim to: train new active Wikipedia editors from the southern regions; аdd new articles about underrepresented topics from the South; update and improve existing articles with accurate information. The training will cover how to create, edit, and translate articles for on Kyrgyz language Wikipedia. We will also teach participants how to upload and use images on Wikimedia Commons. During the workshop, we will focus on writing new articles about notable people, historical buildings, streets, and remote villages from the South. We will also update existing articles with accurate and current information, such as population data. This project will create a new generation of contributors and give a new impetus to the development of the Kyrgyz language Wikipedia community with new young contributors from the region who are motivated to contribute to the development of the Kyrgyz language.
- Describe which activities you plan to implement
- We plan to organize a two-day workshop for 15 participants from southern oblasts (Osh, Jalal-Abad).
- Preparation (online call) - June 20-25, 2025:
- Within a few hours the organizing team will draw up the workshop program and determine how to start selecting participants. As a result, we will have a ready-made program for the two-day workshop and a plan for selecting participants, as well as an assignment of responsibilities.
- Participant Selection (online) - July 1-10, 2025:
- We will launch an online form to find participants, as well as advertise through personal acquaintances to select more motivated people. As a result, we will have 15 willing participants from two regions for the two-day workshop.
- Two-day workshop - July 12-13, 2025:
- This will be a two-day workshop with an emphasis on practice. As a result, 15 people will start to actively contribute to the development of Kyrgyz language Wikipedia.
- Preparation (online call) - June 20-25, 2025:
- Describe your team
- Our team consists of active members of the Kyrgyz language Wikimedia:

- For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
- This project is relevant to the Kyrgyz language Wikipedia community and Wikimedia Commons projects. The main focus of the workshop is to train new contributors to edit and create articles on Kyrgyz Wikipedia and also uploading to Wikimedia Commons photos of historical sites and landmarks located near the workshop location for practice.
- Special emphasis will be placed on young people from the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan, as they have few opportunities to learn and improve their Wikipedia skills. The target group is young people from 16 to 28 years old from the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan (Osh and Jalal-Abad). We aim to attract new participants from these communities and help them become active members of the Wikimedia movement.
