Project information

What is the main goal of your project?
  • The main goal of our project is to strengthen the foundation of Western Armenian Wikipedia by creating and improving essential articles that are currently missing. Through a focused edit-a-thon, we aim to fill critical content gaps, making Western Armenian Wikipedia more reliable, comprehensive, and useful for readers worldwide.
  • The project will bring together both experienced and new contributors from Armenia and the global Armenian diaspora, fostering collaboration across borders. This not only enriches the encyclopedia with necessary content but also strengthens our community, encourages new editors to join, and empowers Western Armenian speakers to see their language represented in the digital knowledge space.
  • In the long term, the edit-a-thon will serve as a replicable model for future content drives and help ensure that Western Armenian remains a living, accessible language online.
Describe which activities you plan to implement
  • We plan to organize a focused Western Armenian Wikipedia edit-a-thon dedicated to creating and improving essential articles that are currently missing. The edit-a-thon will take place over the course of three weekends of September 2025 and will be open to both experienced editors and newcomers from Armenia and the global diaspora.
  • Participants will be guided to work on a curated list of high-priority articles (covering core topics such as history, culture, science, geography, and biographies) in order to strengthen the foundation of Western Armenian Wikipedia.
  • To encourage active engagement, we will provide financial incentives in the form of small prizes for the top 5 most active contributors, measured by both quantity and quality of contributions. We will also offer light support and mentoring for new editors, ensuring their work aligns with Wikimedia standards.
  • At the end of the project, we expect to see a significant increase in the number of essential articles available in Western Armenian, along with a stronger and more motivated editing community.
Describe your team
  • Organizers:
    • Shahen Araboghlian - Program Manager - shahen.books@gmail.com
    • Azniv Stepanian - Community Manager - AznivStepanian@westernarmenian.org
  • Participants: open to all Western Armenian editors.
For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
  • The project is primarily relevant to Western Armenian Wikipedia, where the edit-a-thon will directly contribute to creating and improving essential articles. In addition, participants may use Wikimedia Commons to add images and media to support the new content, and Wikidata where relevant links and structured data can be connected to the articles.
  • The project is relevant for the Western Armenian Wikipedia community, a global and diasporic community spread across the CEE region and beyond. It also supports the broader Armenian Wikimedia community, since the creation of essential articles strengthens the overall visibility and credibility of Armenian-language projects within the Wikimedia movement.
  • Our target group includes both experienced Western Armenian Wikipedia editors and new contributors, especially students, young professionals, and members of the Armenian diaspora who are eager to support their language in digital spaces. The edit-a-thon aims to attract new editors while also motivating existing contributors, ensuring a balance of community growth and content improvement.
