Filling the Gaps – Part Two
Filling the Gaps – Part Two builds on the success of our previous microgrant, which resulted in over 315 new and a dozen more improved Western Armenian Wikipedia articles—far exceeding expectations of 150-200 articles in our initial grant proposal. The project aims to continue filling key informational gaps while strengthening the skills and engagement of Western Armenian editors across the diaspora. Through collaborative editing and community outreach, it promotes Western Armenian as a living language of knowledge and contributes to the diversity of the Wikimedia movement.

In which CEE country/ies will the project activities be implemented?
  • The project will be implemented across the CEE region, with active participation from both Armenia and the global Armenian diaspora. Since Western Armenian is predominantly a diaspora language, contributors from outside Armenia will play an equally significant—if not greater—role in the project’s activities. This cross-regional collaboration is a defining strength of our community and a key factor in the project’s impact.

Project information

[edit]
What is the main goal of your project?
  • Filling the Gaps – Part Two builds on the success of our previous microgrant, which resulted in over 315 new and a dozen more improved Western Armenian Wikipedia articles—far exceeding expectations of 150-200 articles in our initial grant proposal. The project aims to continue filling key informational gaps while strengthening the skills and engagement of Western Armenian editors across the diaspora. Through collaborative editing and community outreach, it promotes Western Armenian as a living language of knowledge and contributes to the diversity of the Wikimedia movement.
Describe which activities you plan to implement
  • Filling the Gaps – Part Two will consist of a three-weekend online edit-a-thon in November of 2025 focused on expanding and improving Western Armenian Wikipedia articles on underrepresented topics. Building on lessons from the first round, we will:
  • Curate a new list of missing or underdeveloped articles based on community feedback and analytics.
  • Provide ongoing mentorship and editorial support during the edit-a-thon.
  • Recognize top contributors through digital certificates and small prizes.
  • The activity will encourage consistent participation, improve article quality, and foster stronger community connections across continents.
Describe your team
  • Organizers:
    • Shahen Araboghlian - Program Manager - shahen.books@gmail.com
    • Azniv Stepanian - Community Manager - AznivStepanian@westernarmenian.org
  • Participants: open to all Western Armenian editors.
For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
  • The project is primarily relevant to Western Armenian Wikipedia, where participants will create and improve essential articles. Additionally, we saw some edits on Wikidata during our previous Filling the Gaps, so we expect to see some now as well.
  • It directly supports the Western Armenian Wikipedia community—a global, diasporic network of editors across the CEE region and beyond—and contributes to the broader Armenian Wikimedia ecosystem by strengthening the visibility and reliability of Armenian-language content on Wikimedia platforms.
  • Our target group includes both experienced editors and newcomers, particularly students, young professionals, and diaspora members interested in supporting the Western Armenian language online. The edit-a-thon aims to expand participation while deepening engagement among existing contributors.
Do you have any metrics for the proposed grant proposal? If yes, please fill in the number of participants, editors, organisers and content contributions (Wikipedia articles, Wikimedia Commons images, Wikidata items, etc.)
  • Active editors (making at least 20 edits): ~15
  • Organizers: 2 core members from the User Group
  • New or improved Wikipedia articles (Western Armenian): 200–250 essential articles created or substantially improved

Building on the success of the previous “Filling the Gaps” project, these metrics reflect both a focused group of contributors and a significant volume of high-quality content creation.

Any additional comments or remarks about your project
  • We are deeply grateful for the previous microgrant support, which allowed us to launch the first Filling the Gaps project. The results far exceeded our expectations — both in the number of articles created and in the enthusiasm it generated within our community. It became one of the most successful initiatives we’ve ever run, inspiring active participation from editors across the diaspora. With this renewed proposal, we aim to replicate and build on that successful model to continue strengthening Western Armenian Wikipedia.
