Project information

[edit]
What is the main goal of your project?
  • As of today, the Karakalpak Wikipedia has over 11,000 articles. However, a significant portion of these articles are very short—many of them consist of only a few hundred bytes of text. This makes it difficult for readers to access comprehensive and reliable information in the Karakalpak language. Examples of such short articles can be found here.
  • The editor community has already made remarkable progress in increasing the number of articles, and now the focus needs to shift toward improving their quality. As part of this project, we plan to organize a contest aimed at enhancing the content of existing articles. The contest will be held in conjunction with the global campaign Wikipedia Asian Month 2025 (link). The main goal of the contest is to encourage participants to edit and expand existing articles related to Asian countries.
  • Contest Rules:
    • Each participant must improve at least 10 Asian related articles to be eligible for a prize.
    • For every 3,000 bytes of added content, the participant will earn 1 point.
    • At the end of the contest, the top five participants with the highest number of points will receive prizes.
  • Currently, about 50 volunteers are actively contributing to the Karakalpak Wikipedia out of over 150 registered who used to be active users.
  • By organizing this contest, we aim to:
    • Improve the quality of content on the Karakalpak Wikipedia;
    • Make knowledge about Asian countries more accessible to Karakalpak-speaking readers;
    • Motivate participants to focus on quality by contributing to the Karakalpak Wikipedia.
Describe which activities you plan to implement
  • We are planning to implement the following activities as part of our project:
  • Online Workshop – November 10, 2025: We will organize a one-hour online workshop to introduce the Wikipedia Asian Month 2025 campaign. During this session, we will explain the purpose of the contest, highlight content gaps in the Karakalpak Wikipedia, and announce the upcoming competition. We will also present a promotional poster to build excitement and motivate community members to participate.
  • Official Contest Launch – November 15, 2025: The Wikipedia Asian Month 2025 contest will officially begin in the Karakalpak Wikipedia on November 15 and will run through December 15, 2025.
  • Active Outreach – November 15 to 25, 2025: During the first 10 days of the contest, we will actively promote participation through Telegram groups and discussions on the Karakalpak Wikipedia. This will include reminders, encouragement, and support for newcomers.
  • Second Online Workshop – November 25, 2025: A second online session will be held exclusively for those who have joined or are interested in joining the contest. This workshop will offer practical guidance on contest rules, article editing standards, and a live collaborative editing session — similar to an “online Edit-a-thon.”
  • Jury Review Period – December 15, 2025 to January 10, 2026: After the contest ends, a jury panel will evaluate all submissions, calculate scores, and determine the winners.
  • Online Awards Ceremony – January 10, 2026: We will host a virtual closing ceremony to celebrate the contest's achievements, share the overall results, and officially announce and congratulate the winners.

  • This project is primarily aimed at improving and expanding the content of the Karakalpak Wikipedia. The main Wikimedia project will be Wikipedia in the Karakalpak language.
  • The project is relevant for the Karakalpak-speaking community, especially for active and novice contributors to the Karakalpak Wikipedia. Our target group consists of local volunteer editors who are already involved or interested in creating quality content in their native language.
  • As part of this initiative, we aim to support, motivate, and equip these volunteers to improve existing articles, especially those related to Asian countries, thereby enhancing the quality and usefulness of the Karakalpak Wikipedia for its readers.
