Project information
[edit]- What is the main goal of your project?
- The main goal of our project is to empower women from the southern regions of Azerbaijan by enhancing their digital literacy, research, and writing skills through participation in Wikipedia editing and content creation. We aim to increase the visibility of Azerbaijani women’s achievements, culture, and local heritage on Wikipedia while creating a sustainable community of female contributors who actively share reliable knowledge in the Azerbaijani language.
- Describe which activities you plan to implement
- Project Description: Engaging Women from the Southern Region of Azerbaijan in Wikipedia Training (28–30 November)
- The project “Engaging Women from the Southern Region of Azerbaijan in Wikipedia Training” aims to empower women from Lankaran, Masalli, Astara, Lerik, and surrounding areas by developing their digital literacy and knowledge-sharing skills through practical Wikipedia workshops. The 3-day program, taking place from 28 to 30 November, will train women to create, edit, and improve Azerbaijani-language Wikipedia articles about women’s achievements, regional culture, and heritage.
- On 28 November, the first day will focus on orientation and introduction. Participants will be welcomed and introduced to the idea of free knowledge, the global Wikimedia movement, and the gender gap that exists on Wikipedia. They will learn the fundamentals of Wikipedia — including its principles, editorial guidelines, and structure — and will create their own user accounts. Through group discussions, they will identify underrepresented topics from their region, such as the lives of local women leaders, educators, artisans, and cultural figures. By the end of the first day, each participant will select one topic to work on during the following sessions.
- The second day, 29 November, will be fully dedicated to practical editing and writing. Participants will receive step-by-step instruction on how to edit and format articles, insert citations, and use Wikimedia Commons for uploading images while respecting copyright rules. With the support of trainers and mentors, they will create their first articles or improve existing ones. The day will also include peer-review sessions, where participants will evaluate each other’s work and receive constructive feedback. This day emphasizes skill development, collaboration, and confidence-building in using digital platforms.
- On 30 November, the final day, a regional Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will be organized to consolidate the skills gained and encourage teamwork. Participants will collectively write and improve articles related to women’s contributions to Azerbaijani society, education, and the cultural identity of the southern region. The event will highlight local female role models and traditions unique to the area. At the end of the day, a short presentation will be held on how participants can stay active in the Wikimedia community. A “Southern Wiki Women Network” will be established to ensure sustainability and long-term engagement among newly trained editors. The closing ceremony will include the presentation of certificates, recognition of active participants, and a group photo session. Media representatives and local stakeholders will be invited to cover the event, helping to raise public awareness about women’s involvement in knowledge creation.
- Following the training days, an online mentoring group (via Telegram or WhatsApp) will be created to maintain communication, share experiences, and support continuous learning. A short digital report will be prepared to summarize the project’s outcomes — including the number of participants trained, new articles created, and success stories shared online.
- Through these activities, the project is expected to train at least 60 women in Wikipedia editing and digital literacy, create or improve 20–30 Azerbaijani-language articles, and establish a sustainable community of female Wikipedia contributors in the southern region of Azerbaijan. By giving women the tools to document their culture, community, and personal histories, this initiative will contribute to gender equality, cultural preservation, and open knowledge dissemination in the Azerbaijani language.

- Throughout these years, I have developed and delivered numerous capacity-building workshops on topics such as digital literacy, knowledge sharing, media competence, and Wikipedia editing skills. My experience also includes giving interviews on national television channels, where I have promoted the importance of digital education, cultural documentation, and open knowledge initiatives in Azerbaijan.
- Since 2024, I have started organizing educational camps and workshops aimed at empowering youth and women, particularly in rural and regional communities. These camps combine practical learning with community engagement, helping participants to gain both technical and social skills in an inclusive environment.

- For this project, I will collaborate with Binnat Jafarov, a specialist in the oil industry, who will assist with the technical and logistical aspects of the project. His expertise in coordination and communication will contribute significantly to the organization of the event and participant support during the training days.
- The team supporting Nuray will include:
- Local coordinators from Lankaran, Astara, Masalli, and Lerik, who will handle participant outreach, logistics, and community relations;
- Two assistant trainers from the Azerbaijani Wikipedia community, responsible for guiding participants during editing sessions and maintaining article quality;
- A media and communications volunteer, in charge of documentation, social media visibility, and event promotion;
- A monitoring and evaluation specialist, who will collect feedback, measure impact, and prepare the final project report.
- Together, this diverse and experienced team combines academic knowledge, field experience, and community engagement skills to ensure the successful implementation of the project and to build a strong network of female Wikipedia editors in the southern region of Azerbaijan.
- For which Wikimedia projects is the project relevant? For which communities is the project relevant? What is your target group?
- This project is primarily relevant to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
The main focus will be on improving and expanding Azerbaijani-language Wikipedia articles related to women’s biographies, local heritage, cultural history, and ecology of the Southern region of Azerbaijan. Participants will also be introduced to Wikimedia Commons for uploading freely licensed photos of local landmarks, events, and historical places, and to Wikidata for adding structured information that supports article development and data connectivity across Wikimedia projects.
- The project directly supports the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy goals, especially by promoting Knowledge Equity — providing underrepresented voices and regions, such as women from southern Azerbaijan, the opportunity to share their knowledge with the world.
- Our target group consists mainly of women, students, and teachers from the Southern region of Azerbaijan (Lankaran, Astara, Masalli, Lerik). These participants often have limited access to global digital platforms and need guidance to confidently engage with online knowledge communities.
- Through practical, hands-on training sessions, participants will learn how to create and edit Wikipedia articles, upload media to Commons, and use Wikidata entries to enrich content. As a result, this project will not only help fill the gender gap in Wikimedia projects but will also strengthen the Azerbaijani-language content on open knowledge platforms and foster a growing community of female editors from rural areas.
- Do you have any metrics for the proposed grant proposal? If yes, please fill in the number of participants, editors, organisers and content contributions (Wikipedia articles, Wikimedia Commons images, Wikidata items, etc.)
- For this project, we plan to engage 30 women from the southern regions of Azerbaijan, including Lankaran, Astara, Masalli, and Lerik, in a 3-day Wikipedia training program. Through these workshops, at least 20 participants are expected to become active Wikipedia editors, contributing to the Azerbaijani-language Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
- The project will be implemented by a team of 6 members, including myself (Nuray Tanriverdiyeva) as the lead trainer and project coordinator, 2 assistant trainers from the Azerbaijani Wikimedia community, 2 local coordinators, and 1 media/communications volunteer. Together, we will provide training, mentorship, and logistical support to ensure the successful engagement of participants and high-quality contributions.
- During the training, participants will create or improve at least 20–30 Azerbaijani-language Wikipedia articles focused on women’s achievements, local culture, heritage, and ecology. They will also upload approximately 30–50 freely licensed images to Wikimedia Commons and create or enrich around 15–20 Wikidata items to link structured data across Wikimedia projects.
- Beyond content creation, the project aims to establish a “Southern Wiki Women Network” to support ongoing collaboration, peer mentoring, and community engagement. We expect that at least 80% of participants will continue contributing to Wikipedia, Commons, or Wikidata within six months after the workshops.
- Overall, these metrics demonstrate the project’s tangible outcomes in building a strong community of female editors, expanding Azerbaijani-language content, and promoting knowledge equity across Wikimedia projects.

[edit]- Any additional comments or remarks about your project
- This project aims not only to provide practical Wikipedia training but also to empower women in the southern regions of Azerbaijan by giving them the tools and confidence to contribute to open knowledge. Beyond content creation, it fosters digital literacy, teamwork, and community engagement, helping participants develop skills that extend into education, research, and cultural documentation.
- The project is designed to have lasting impact: participants will continue contributing to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata after the workshops, and the “Southern Wiki Women Network” will ensure ongoing mentorship and collaboration.
- By focusing on underrepresented voices and topics, the project contributes to Wikimedia’s global mission of knowledge equity and helps preserve the unique cultural, historical, and ecological heritage of southern Azerbaijan.
- We believe that this initiative will serve as a model for similar regional programs in Azerbaijan and beyond, demonstrating how small-scale, community-driven projects can create meaningful contributions to the global free knowledge ecosystem.
