Cyprus Museums: Preserving Heritage, Sharing Knowledge

Within the scope of the Cyprus Museums: Preserving Heritage, Sharing Knowledge project, we carried out an extensive documentation effort by visiting and photographing a total of 25 museums across 6 different cities within a 7-day period. During the fieldwork, we documented exhibition spaces, architectural features, collections, and displayed objects in detail. As a result of this intensive process, we produced more than 2,000 photographs, and both the quantity and quality of the outputs exceeded our initial expectations. Some of the museums we initially planned to visit were unfortunately inaccessible due to ongoing restoration works or temporary closures.

Following the completion of the on-site visits, we organized three separate working sessions to upload and integrate the produced content into Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons. During these sessions, museum-related entries were created or improved, structured data was added to Wikidata, and selected photographs were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under appropriate open licenses. This process significantly enhanced the digital visibility of museums in Cyprus and contributed to making the island’s cultural heritage more accessible to a global audience.

Overall, the project proved to be highly productive in terms of both fieldwork and digital dissemination. The scale, depth, and sustainability of the outputs strongly supported the project’s core objective of preserving cultural heritage and sharing knowledge through open platforms.

Additional part of the report (Lessons learned)

Lessons learned During the project, we realized that the artifacts exhibited inside the museums as well as the museum buildings themselves could be used across dozens of different Wikipedia articles and could also be referenced in numerous entries on Wiktionary. We came to understand that the photographs we took were not merely standalone images, but powerful tools for enriching articles, providing visual context, and serving as lasting documentation of cultural heritage. Through this experience, we clearly saw how a small, five-person team was able to systematically photograph museums across an entire country by working with careful planning, collaboration, and a shared vision of open knowledge. This process demonstrated that even a limited team, when well-coordinated and committed, can create high-impact, reusable content that supports education, research, and the preservation of culture across multiple Wikimedia projects.
