Filling the Gaps – Part Two
By: ShahenWasHere
The main goal of Filling the Gaps – Part Two was to continue addressing essential content gaps on Western Armenian Wikipedia while strengthening editor engagement across our global community. We are pleased to report that this goal was fully achieved: during the edit-a-thon, participants created 150+ new articles and substantially improved over 260 others — a combined outcome of 400+ high-quality essential articles. This exceeds our original target of 200–250 articles, demonstrating the growing capacity, motivation, and collaborative strength of the Western Armenian Wikipedia community.

The project consisted of a structured three-weekend online edit-a-thon focused on critical missing topics identified by community feedback and analytics. Organizers provided ongoing support, coordinated communications, and maintained a curated list of essential articles to guide editors. Participants from Armenia and the diaspora actively contributed throughout the event. To encourage consistent engagement, we offered small prizes for top contributors while prioritizing quality over quantity.

Outcomes and metrics:

  • Newly created articles: 150+
  • Substantially improved articles: 260+
  • Total essential articles impacted: 400+
  • Active editors (15–20 edits minimum): 6
  • Organizers: 2

These results far surpassed expectations and further strengthened the core knowledge base of Western Armenian Wikipedia.

Lessons learned

One of the key lessons from Part Two is that timing has a significant impact on participation patterns in our community. Because the edit-a-thon took place during exam and finals season, as well as the broader holiday period, some regular contributors were unable to participate. As a result, we had a smaller group of 6 highly active editors this round. Importantly, these participants were committed, focused, and deeply engaged, which allowed the project to remain exceptionally productive. In fact, this small but dedicated group created or improved over 400+ essential articles — a strong indicator of the community’s growing skill and efficiency.

The success of this project also reinforced the value of continuity. Building on the momentum of Part One, our contributors entered Part Two with greater confidence, technical knowledge, and a clearer sense of priority topics. Even with fewer participants, the quality and volume of contributions remained high, demonstrating the resilience and maturity of the Western Armenian Wikipedia community. These outcomes confirm that the edit-a-thon model is both sustainable and effective, and that future iterations can continue refining and adapting to seasonal or contextual factors without compromising impact.
