Photographing Azerbaijan's Museum Heritage

The project aimed to document and showcase Azerbaijan's museum artifacts through photography, creating a digital archive to make these items more accessible for research. It facilitated in-depth study, increased public awareness of Azerbaijan's cultural heritage, and provided educational resources for schools and museums.

Preparation phase
  • Museum items were carefully selected and categorized.
  • Modern equipment, including rented cameras, was prepared.
  • Proper licenses and metadata were planned for Wikimedia Commons.
Fieldwork
  1. 26 October 2024: Visit to the Azerbaijan Museum of History.
  2. 11 December 2024: Visit to the Museum of Musical Culture.
  3. 21 December 2024: Visits to the Museum of Independence and Museum of Theatre.

During the visits, high-quality photos of exhibits were taken, capturing their details from multiple angles. Metadata was also collected for each image, including descriptions, dates, and authors.

Post-fieldwork
  • Photos were edited and categorized.
  • 226 files were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with appropriate licenses.

Outcomes
  1. Photos captured: Over 300 photos taken across four museums.
  2. Uploads to Wikimedia Commons: 226 files uploaded, complying with copyright policies.
  3. Usage: The images are ready to be added to articles about Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage, supporting researchers, educators, and the general public.

Lessons
  1. Copyright restrictions: Uploads were limited due to copyright policies, highlighting the need for careful exhibit selection.
  2. Engagement: Allocating visits across multiple dates allowed better coverage but required additional coordination.
  3. Improvement opportunities: Future projects could include photography workshops and discussions about museum copyright policies.
