WikiKyrgyz 2024: Empowering Editors, Enriching Knowledge
By: Kazy
As a result of this microgrant, we aimed to increase the number of new articles on the Kyrgyz Wikipedia about Asian countries (excluding Kyrgyzstan), and to strengthen solidarity and communication within the Kyrgyz Wikipedia community. The results exceeded our expectations: more articles were created than planned, and participants began to interact more actively. Moreover, representatives of our community began to show more initiative in informal chats. The microgrant had a positive impact, motivating participants to make meaningful contributions to the development of Kyrgyz language Wikipedia.

As part of the microgrant implementation, we organized several key activities aimed at expanding content about Asian countries in the Kyrgyz Wikipedia and strengthening engagement within the community.

  1. We held an online presentation of the wiki-marathon, which was attended by more than 10 people. This helped to engage new participants and prepare them for upcoming activities.
  2. In collaboration with the Asian user group team, we organized an offline Edit-a-thon, which gathered 7 participants from the Kyrgyz Wikipedia community.
  3. And the main part of the implemantation of this nicrogrant was to launch a wiki-marathon “Asia Month 2024” in Kyrgyz Wikipedia. A total of 12 editors participated, which is slightly less than the planned 15, but the quality and volume of materials created exceeded expectations.

Thus, despite a slight deviation in the number of participants, the microgrant enabled us to significantly exceed the target for newly created articles and media content on Wikimedia Commons. This confirmed the effectiveness of the activities carried out and their positive impact on the development of the Kyrgyz Wikipedia community.

Lessons learned

One of the key lessons learned during the project was the importance of motivating participants. At the beginning of the marathon, the activity was low - not a single new article appeared. However, after the announcement of a contest with prizes for the most active authors, interest in the event grew significantly: participants began to specify the conditions and actively create articles. As a result, instead of the expected 90 articles, 151 new articles were written in Kyrgyz, which exceeded our expectations.

Another important difficulty was the evaluation of articles. Initially we assumed that this process would take a little time, but in practice it turned out to be much more time-consuming than the marathon itself. This was a valuable lesson for us, and in future projects we will be more realistic in planning time and resources for evaluating papers.
