Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in Slovakia
By: KormiSK
Thanks to the microgrant, we were able to organize Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in Slovakia and promote this photography contest aimed at pictures of natural areas and objects. We reached over 430 pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by 13 users.
full report...

This year, we promoted the contest on Slovak Wikipedia using the banner, as well as on Facebook of Wikimedia Slovakia. We reached similar results compared to previous year - we reached a total of 434 images (and 1 video) uploaded by a total of 13 users. This is slightly fewer than last year, but we still consider this a great success for the event. The contest was organized by the members of the user group, including the promotion and the first round of evaluation. In this first round, we have selected 45 images. In the second round, two external judges have selected top 15 images, which we've considered the local winners and sent to the international round of Wiki Loves Earth. These images were taken by 6 different users, which we also consider good variety. Out of these 6 users, we selected three of them with the most top images to receive prizes. However, we were only able to send prizes to two of them so far; we have not received an address from the third one, but we will keep trying. Besides these users, we decided to send a special prize to one more participant, who contributed the most pictures in this year's contest. We've published these results on our webpage, as well as on Facebook, where we've split these results into 7 posts and promoted each of them separately, to further promote the event.

Similarly to last year, only one user used the travel reimbursement option this year. We think we might want to promote this option more next year, which could also help more users join.

The final evaluation was made by two invited professionals (one photographer and one art theorist).

Additional part of the report (Lessons learned)
Lessons learned

In 2025, we have only seen three returning users from the last year. This means our user retention is likely not high or maybe users from last year just did not have the time to participate. Either way, we want to try to raise the retention by actively communicating specifically with these users, who have joined last year, and ask them to join again, either on their Discussion pages or via e-mail where possible. We plan to organize Wiki Loves Earth next year again, so we can start planning this longer ahead.

In a similar sense, our travel reimbursement option was only used by a single person. We think we might need to promote this option more often, especially on Facebook. It is also possible that the participating users don't know about this option - we would like to try and make them know about it individually.

Financial report
Financial report for your project
Type of expense Description Amount (EUR)
Travel support Travel reimbursement for photographers 46,35
Prizes Prizes for the best photographers 162,00

We did not use the whole budget and were left with 76,02 EUR. This amount was transferred internally into the microgrant MG-18: Wiki Loves Film in Slovakia 2025 for use within this project upon agreement with the CEE Hub by e-mail.

Achieved metrics

We aimed to achieve similar or better numbers as we did in the last year of the competition. We have successfully reached our goal of more than 400 images, even though we had fewer users participating compared to last year.
