Wikimedia CEE Hub/Microgrants/report/Wiki Loves Film 2025 – final report

During the summer call Wiki Loves Film 2025 we have suggested participants to join and organise events within their country related to film festivals or independently. We have managed to get access to Karlovy Vary IFF (Jan Beránek) and Summer Film School Festival (Pavel Bednařík) in the Czech Republic. As well we have made progress with arrangements for New Horizons festival (Poland) for next year. Crucial participation was also delivered by Macedonian participants during Manaki Brothers Film Festival and MakeDox Film Festival (both North Macedonia). Also Romanian community of wikimedians was very active, launching their own project website and awarded participants with financial rewards. Own project page was also launched in Slovakia.
For the whole community and participants we have organised an online edit-a-thon on Monday 18th of August. This edit-a-thon was more about presenting the project and informing about activities in different countries, but it was a good opportunity to meet other participants and edit some articles as well. But we highly appreciate independent activities and competition within some countries (Romania, Slovakia, North Macedonia), specially because it was a first year of the CEE call.
In the Czech Republic, we have organised some offline events as well. The most important was a historical walk for WLF participants in the path of vanished Prague Cinemas, which was organised by Edison Filmhub, Czech partner of the challenge. After the walk, participants joined a screening of the new documentary on Lumiere brothers Adventure continues (for free). This event could be a good example for organising similar ones in other countries for local communities.
Participants had been awarded in respect of their activity. Awards without language barier had been distributed to the participants by mail. Some countries awarded their participants in an individual competition as well (Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia).

|
We have found out, that film is a theme, which is easily transferable within CEE region, as film is a common language and favourite art form for Wikimedians in all the countries. We have encountered, that there are many enthusiasts, who are willing to join neverthless the background or language. Therefore we can see, that this call has a huge potential for the future. We aim to ask CEE Youth members to join and help with organising this call i next editions as well as asking the branches in other CEE countries to co-organise it (specially local activities and partnerships). Mentioning the obstacles, we have found out, how difficult is to organise and international challenge in general. It was not easy to shift the focus from local priorities and details to international ones. For sure we need to start earlier with preparation of the whole project (6 months minimum). Also we need to find a key person in each participant country to be a contact person to reach. Also we would like to focus more on organising local events in countries, who are willing to participate and have an enthusiastic Wikimedians to join the call. Next big lesson is about getting the most attractive awards we could get – festival accreditations etc. Finally, we are aware of building our own internal capacities within WMCZ as the main organiser to be able to cope with the whole challenge adequately. |
