Abstract:

Tirana has undergone significant urban development and transformation over the years, resulting in the loss of many historic structures. Preserving Tirana is a project aimed at the preservation and revitalization of the architectural heritage and cultural identity of Tirana, the capital city of Albania. The project focuses on the protection, restoration, and adaptive reuse of historical buildings and landmarks in Tirana. It started very spontaneously with a friend and it escalated quickly. We engaged the WCUGA to make as many contributions as possible. We had Lars Haefner who helped us with the categories, we made some drone videos and we tried to upload the video on Wikimedia Commons also. We also brought a illustrator, who loved to illustrate the building that we uploaded on Wikimedia Commons as part of our project, and we uploaded the illustrations itself.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

The benefits of this proposal are far-reaching. By rectifying the historical oversight and bridging the gap in Wikipedia, we promote historical buildings with architectural values that are forgotten. Tirana has undergone in a lot of change this past years. Our focus was to raise awareness and to make people understand the values of build history. Furthermore, the inclusion of these missing articles in Wikipedia transcends the confines of Tirana itself. It empowers the global community to delve into the depths of architectural history, enriching our understanding of the past and showcasing the diverse contributions within the field. By rectifying this historical oversight, we pave the way for a more accurate representation of the world's architectural heritage, unveiling a tapestry of knowledge that inspires generations to come.
