Abstract:
Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month is an annual writing challenge that invites the global Wikipedia community to contribute to the visibility of Ukrainian culture: art, music, literature, cinematography, and notable figures by improving and creating content across multiple language editions. In the past five years, we have attracted almost 700 participants who contributed to writing over 8,000 articles in around 110 language editions.
The campaign aims to strengthen cultural diplomacy by using Wikipedia as a platform for cultural exchange and understanding. It also contributes to Wikipedia’s mission of making knowledge freely accessible, with a special focus on cultural representation during times of geopolitical tension and war.
The proposal presents the campaign and its impact, drawing on data from previous editions and community engagement metrics.

By showcasing the success and challenges of the campaign, this proposal illustrates how Ukraine’s Cultural Diplomacy Month serves as a powerful example of how open platforms like Wikipedia can support cultural diplomacy. It empowers communities and institutions to work together to bring cultural identity forward, building bridges across languages and regions through shared knowledge. It’s an opportunity for experienced Wikipedians to know more about such an initiative and take part in the next year.
