Abstract:

It's undeniable that encouraging young people to get involved in Wikimedia projects is important. But how to do it? During this session, I'll outline this problem and show how it was dealt with in Poland: through an interdisciplinary project for teachers from all over the country called "Wikiteka". I'll present its most important assumptions and positive effects. I'll prove that to effectively encourage young people to Wikimedia, we need trained and informed teachers who can use Wikipedia for educational purposes. I'll also emphasize how to deal with problems in the case of organized educational activities.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

Many affiliates from the CEE region are considering involving young people in editing Wikimedia projects. The lecture will give our community members a chance to learn about the pros and cons of such activities. It'll also be an opportunity to refer to the CEE Youth Conference in Prague and the conclusions that can be drawn from the project organized after that conference.
