Abstract:

Wikimuseum is a prototype platform for multilingual virtual exhibitions developed by volunteers from the Estonian Wikipedia, Reprex, and GLAM partners. It focuses on endangered language communities such as the Seto, Sámi, and Livonians, whose cultural heritage is often fragmented across borders and archives. Using Wikimedia tools like Wikibase and curated GLAM content, the project brings together dispersed media and knowledge into accessible, narrative-driven collections. Wikimuuseum supports storytelling through thematic exhibitions and linked data, offering new ways to preserve and present cultural identity online—even for communities too small to sustain a full Wikipedia edition.

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of CEE?

Participants will gain insight into how to coordinate multiple GLAM institutions and cultural communities around a shared, multilingual digital heritage project. Wikimuseum demonstrates how small language and cultural groups can engage with open knowledge ecosystems through thematic exhibitions, collaborative metadata linking, and shared storytelling. The session will show how combining tools like Wikibase and Wikimedia Commons can create sustainable, interconnected knowledge environments. Attendees will learn how this model can incubate new encyclopedia or knowledge areas—especially when individual items lack traditional notability but gain meaning in curated collections—offering a replicable strategy for underrepresented or marginalized knowledge communities.
