Campaign Overview

[edit]

Now in our third edition, the Wiki for Human Rights 2025 campaign in Kenya is part of a global initiative by the Wikimedia Foundation to ensure that everyone has access to neutral, fact-based, and current information related to human rights and sustainability.

This year, as a prelude to Wikimania 2025, under the global campaign theme; Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now, we focus on emphasising that human rights are not abstract ideals—they are the foundation for living with dignity today and building a fair, inclusive future.

Through our campaign activities, which are we are calling on Wikimedians, Journalists, civil society organizations, environmental and human rights defenders, and climate activists to document and share knowledge that empowers Kenyans to understand and protect their rights, especially the Rights to a Healthy Environment, Digital Rights and Access to Information, which is increasingly under threat in Kenya and globally.

Key Reflections from Panelists:

  • The intersection of human rights, policy, and conservation is critical in shaping a just society.
  • Access to reliable information empowers citizens to claim and defend rights.
  • Stronger links are needed between legal advocacy, grassroots mobilization, and policy reform.
  • Digital platforms like Wikipedia are invaluable tools for documentation and localization of environmental justice, housing rights, and civic participation.

4. Lessons Learned in 2025'

  • Localized content drives relevance: Translating and creating articles rooted in Kenyan and African realities fosters greater ownership.
  • Youth engagement sustains momentum: Training programs attracted new editors but continuous mentorship is needed.
  • Cross-sector partnerships are key: Collaboration with civil society, academia, and journalists ensures impact beyond Wikipedia.
  • Media visibility strengthens advocacy: Leveraging local journalism amplified campaign reach.
  • Sustainability requires year-round engagement: Campaign activities should extend beyond a single campaign window.
  • a research to map out the rights that matter the most to various demographics in Kenya would yield more factual data
