Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda/Board Elections 2025

The Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda will conduct board elections between January and February 2025 to select five board members who will form the governing body for a two-year term. The next board election will take place in 2027.


Eligibility Criteria for Voting Members

As outlined in the constitution, Voting Members must:

  • Be Ugandan citizens with an active Wikimedia account.
  • Have actively participated in WCUGU activities.
  • Contributed at least 100 edits or contributions annually to Wikimedia projects for the past two consecutive years.


Privileges of Voting Members:

  • Vote and participate in board elections.
  • Attend and speak at general meetings.
  • Serve on the governing board.


Election Timeline

  • Community Meeting: January 25, 2025
  • Call for Applications: January 25 – February 8, 2025
  • Candidate Discussions: February 9–14, 2025
  • Candidate Forum: February 15, 2025
  • Voting Period: February 16–21, 2025
  • Ballot Processing and Announcement of Results: February 22–23, 2025

Ballot Process

  • The election will be facilitated through OpaVote (www.opavote.com), managed by the Elections Committee.
  • Voting will be conducted as a secret ballot.
  • Each Voting Member will receive a unique ballot sent to their primary membership email account.


Candidate Questions for the Board Elections

As part of the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda's first board elections, the Elections Committee has prepared the following questions for candidates. These questions will help the community understand the candidates' visions, plans, and approaches to governance.

What do you think is working well within the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda? What areas need improvement?
How have you contributed to the Wikimedia movement and the User Group’s activities over the past year?
What do you see as the role of the board in ensuring the sustainability and growth of the User Group?
Do you foresee any potential conflicts of interest if you are elected to the board?
Community Engagement & Representation What steps would you take to ensure that all voices in the Wikimedia Uganda community are heard and represented in board decisions?
How would you ensure transparent and effective communication between the board, members, and other stakeholders?
How do you plan to encourage active participation from members beyond just voting in elections?
How would you support the recruitment and retention of new members to strengthen the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda?
Establishing Board Responsibilities & Governance As this is the first elected board, what structures and policies do you think need to be put in place to ensure the board functions effectively?
How will you define success for this first board, and how should it be measured?
What steps will you take to ensure transparency and accountability within the board’s operations?
How will you work to build a strong governance culture for future boards?
Wikimedia Movement & Partnerships What are your thoughts on the role of the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda within the broader Wikimedia movement, and how should it collaborate with other affiliates?
There is an increasing push for Wikimedia communities to engage in knowledge equity, local content creation, and advocacy. How do you think the User Group should position itself to align with these priorities?
How would you approach supporting the User Group’s fundraising efforts to ensure financial sustainability?
How would you assess the impact of the group’s programs and partnerships to ensure they align with the mission and benefit the community?

The Elections Committee encourages candidates to review these questions in preparation for the candidate forum and to share their perspectives with the community.
