Leadership and inclusion
Diverse, skilled, and accountable leadership
| ||
What kind of skills does the affiliate leadership possess? | The most important asset that the group leaders have is that they bring their extensive experience editing Wikipedia and sister projects. The leaders of the group have many many years of experience in the movement and know it very well. They are bureaucrats, administrators, and sysops and they have colaborated with the Strategy of Wikimedia movement and the writing of the UCC.
Is there any kind of succession plan for the affiliate leadership? | One of the reasons why we have created the School for Female Leaders is because we know that long-term users will at some point abandon the movement and replacement of the new generations is needed.
Are there any trainings that affiliate leadership undergo before they assume their leadership position? | Yes. We hope that as time goes by, future leaders will emerge from the School for Female Leaders. We hope that women who go through these courses can then inspire, encourage and motivate other women through positive influence.
Are there any requirements for affiliate leadership to disclose their conflict(s) of interests? | No.
Diversity balance (especially gender)
| ||
What is the diversity level of the affiliate leadership and membership body? | All members of the user group are women or identify as women. There is a wide geographical diversity, we have members from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, United States, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, El Salvador, Venezuela and Uruguay. There is also a wide age spectrum: our youngest member is 18 years old and the oldest is 66. There are members descended from indigenous peoples and people of African descent.
How is the affiliate leadership encouraging gender diversity in the decision-making process(es) of the affiliate? | N/A
Universal Code of Conduct compliance
| ||
How does the affiliate leadership ensure, enforce, and evaluate compliance with the Universal Code of Conduct obligations? | We adhere to Wikimedia's friendly space policy and respect the Universal Code of Conduct. We were actively collaborating in the ratification of the revised application guidelines of the Universal Code of Conduct (UCC). We are aware of its importance and try to promote understanding of the UCC and engage in proactive work to prevent violations. All our online and offline spaces are subject to the UCC. In fact, our group is about just that, creating pleasant and receptive environments for people who come for the first time. That is why we work individually and with women's groups, because women need safe spaces in which to consult other women.

What would affiliate leadership list as the top 3 (three) capacities of the affiliate? (e.g. evaluation, community governance, programs and events, organizational governance and resource policies, conflict management, partnerships, fundraising, communication and media relations, contributor development, on-wiki technical skills, policy advocacy, etc) | The most important asset we bring is our extensive experience editing Wikipedia, our on-wiki technical skills. Over the years, we have honed our skills in navigating the platforms, understanding its guidelines, and creating high-quality content. This deep familiarity allows us to confidently teach others how to edit, guiding them through challenges and empowering them to contribute effectively. That is why we have created the School for Female Leaders and we are dedicated to providing training to teach quality editing. Our first-hand knowledge allows us to simplify complex concepts and provide practical advice, ensuring new editors feel supported and empowered as they begin their journey.
Recruiting women in our main goal. One of our greatest achievements is having generated a safe, diverse and welcoming environment for female editors, who are encouraged to edit and do not feel insecure, fostering an environment of support and inclusion among Latin American collaborators to strengthen ties, a sense of belonging and community identity. Our meetings and trainings function as a safe and permanent space for meetings between Latin American women of all ages within the Wikimedia movement, which is why among our members there are women from many chapters and user groups in the region.
The result of our work can also be seen in the content added to the projects.

What are the 3 (three) capacities that the affiliate would like to strengthen in the next 12 months? | Even though we work a lot, we cannot make our work visible. We need to improve communication and media relations. We want to position and make visible our work and the impact we are achieving in the media and on social networks. That is our biggest shortcoming. We are interested in keeping our blog active by writing articles and making ourselves known in society and for that we need availability of editors, writers and time. We are very interested in making Wikimedia's work visible where it is not known, fundamentally in Latin American countries where there are no affiliates or knowledge of Wikimedia.
In our group there are plenty of ideas for new projects but we lack is financial support to put them into practice. For example, we need to create videos to show what we do but professional videos cost money. We need a zoom permanently for our meetings but that costs money. We need to create a website for our group but that costs money. We would like the Foundation to support more these types of initiatives coming from long-term volunteers who have a lot of experience in on-wiki editing.
Volunteer work is exhausting. Without permanent funds we will not be able to continue sustaining our work pace. We need financial support so that the most bureaucratic activities, such as writing reports, doing translations, writing articles for our blog or generating new material, do not decline due to lack of volunteer hours.
What are the organizations, community projects, or groups that the affiliate had been working or seeking to work with to develop and support the 3 capacities? | We belong to Iberocoop.Groups of the Wikimedia Movement with which we have collaborated during the last year:Wikimedistas Artes de Nuestras Islas Wikimedistas de Republica DominicanaWikimedia Small Projects in SpanishWikimedistas El SalvadorWikimedia ColombiaWikimedia MéxicoWikiesferaWikimedistas de UruguayWikiAcción Perú We have participated in many international and regional campaigns and projects like Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid, Event:¡Alto! Mujeres haciendo historia, Interwiki Women Collaboration and Mujereando with many chapters and user groups in the region. We work with women's or feminist organizations and groups in several countries, like WINN, CIPAF (Dominican Republic), Museo de la Mujer (Argentina), SENACYT (Panamá), CIEPS (Panamá), UBAfadu and CPAU (Argentina), PUCP (Perú), UNHABITAT and but none of them provide us with financial support. We want to improve the management and self-management capacity of volunteers at Wikimedia and to do so we believe it is important that WMF invest in the development of skills and leadership in women in the region. |
