Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2023-2024/Draft/External Trends/Future Audiences conversation
Overview
[edit]As part of the Wikimedia Foundation's Annual Plan for 2023-2024, one of our key objectives is to explore strategies for expanding beyond our existing audiences of consumers and contributors, in an effort to truly reach everyone in the world as the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge. To achieve this, we will need to gather community members who are interested in learning about, following along with, and providing input on our experimentation process to ensure that the knowledge about the future we are building is shared effectively with the movement. This "Future Audiences" bucket will include experiments in the following important (and sometimes controversial!) areas. Please join if you are interested in these areas:
- Artificial intelligence / conversation AI
- Third-party social platforms (e.g. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram)
- Video content
Objectives
[edit]The call is intended to kick off a conversation about how the Future Audiences group at WMF is thinking about experimentation and future exploration, and to begin co-creating a strategy for sharing experimental insights with the broader movement. The focus group call is scheduled for 5rd May 2023, from 16:00 to 17:00 UTC. During the call, we would like to discuss the following questions around community communications:
1. How to experiment in new areas in a way that communities can be enthusiastic about?
2. How/where to publicize new experiments and ideas?
3. How/where to share lessons learned?
4. How/where to share research on possible future states and invite community participation?
Your input will be valuable in ensuring that we are using our mandate to innovate effectively – i.e., that we are exploring, learning, and building a clearer vision of the future as a movement.
If you are unable to attend any comments relating to this topic can also be left at the relevant section on the document's talkpage. With reference to Annual plan section "Bucket 3:Future Audiences".
