2022 Board of Trustees Call for Candidates[edit]

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

The Board of Trustees seeks candidates for the 2022 Board of Trustees election. See the announcement and read more on Meta-wiki.

Hello all,

The 2022 Board of Trustees election is here! Please submit your candidacy to serve on the Board of Trustees or, if you know someone who could be a good trustee, encourage them to run for election.

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees oversees the Wikimedia Foundation's operations. Community-and-affiliate selected trustees and Board-appointed trustees make up the Board of Trustees. Each trustee serves a three year term. The Wikimedia community has the opportunity to vote for community-and-affiliate selected trustees.

The Wikimedia community will vote to fill two seats on the Board in August 2022. This is an opportunity to improve the representation, diversity, and expertise of the Board as a team.

Wikimedia is a global movement and seeks candidates from the broader community. Ideal candidates are thoughtful, respectful, community-oriented and align with the Wikimedia Foundation mission. Candidates should think about what experiences and perspectives they will bring to the Board.

The Board would like to find perspectives and voices that are essential but underrepresented in our movement. Accordingly, this year the Board will be asking all candidates to include statements in their application that speak to their experiences in the world and in the movement.

The Board understands it is possible that some candidates from deprioritized regions bring a better lens on diversity than some other candidates from a prioritized region who are not familiar with equity considerations. Candidates should share how those experiences have equipped them to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Trustees serve a three year term and can serve up to three consecutive terms. The expectation is that Trustees serve on at least one of the Board’s committees. The time commitment is about 150 hours per year, excluding travel. This time is not evenly spread throughout the year. The time is concentrated around meetings.

English is the language of business for the Board. Candidates need a basic understanding of English, but support and training are part of onboarding. Candidate applications will be translated into several languages to reach a broad audience of voters.

Candidates from all projects and communities who meet the needs of Wikimedia Trustee are welcome to apply. If you know someone who could be a good trustee, encourage them to run for election. Candidates can find information and submit their nomination on the Apply to be a Candidate page.

Thank you for your support,
