[edit]Experiment title
[edit]Refocus the MainPage to attract new users
Brief description of experiment
[edit]Problem we are trying to solve
[edit]The number of new accounts created is down by 40% since 2019 (stats). This means that fewer people are not even starting their journey of becoming editors (that is, they are not entering "the funnel").
Hypotheses
[edit]If we reform the main page to focus on recruiting new users we will break the trends of decreasing account creations.
Experiment
[edit]Change the layout of the front page, so that the majority of the content "above the fold" is inviting readers to create accounts. By making this a time-bound experiment that is easy to revert to the previous layout, existing editors can feel confident that they are in control.
Expected outcomes / what to track
[edit]- Number of accounts created - this is expected to increase
- Retention of new users - track to see if there is a difference
- Overall page views - track to see if it shrinks due to less prominent links to regular content
Candidate wikis to experiment on
[edit]- The first idea was to try it on Swedish Wikipedia, but as the trend for the last nine months straight seems to be better than the same month the year before perhaps another project with a downwards trend would be better.
Anticipated completion date
[edit]To be decided per project. Each wiki can decide for themselves how to implement the experiment after local consensus to try it has been reached.
