The Wikimedia Futures Lab is a process and convening co-designed by the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland that will help us all learn more about global trends and discuss potential movement-wide responses. There will be an in person convening hosted on January 30–February 1, 2026 in Frankfurt, Germany. The event will have 100 participants. We are looking for a mix of affiliates, contributors and external experts.

We invite participants to examine global trends through a local lens. e.g:

How are you seeing key global trends play out in your local region and context?
What is the current state of public opinion, contributor growth, or legal regulations in your region?
Which recent developments are most concerning or impactful for your community?

In this moment of profound global transformation, the Wikimedia Movement faces challenges to the relevance and resilience of our projects. We need to deepen our understanding of how the world and internet are changing around us, how these changes are impacting our people and projects, and develop joint responses that support our shared mission for free knowledge. Wikimedians have already begun discussing global trends (e.g. Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan 2025/26, Movement analysis of global trends) that impact our communities and projects, from declining trust in online information, to the rise of AI-generated content, shifting regulatory landscapes, and more.

Goal 1: Foster movement belonging

Expected outcome: Participants gain insight into different perspectives and local contexts, they collaborate to develop a shared understanding of challenges and opportunities and imagine futures for Wikimedia.

Goal 2: Discuss key global trends and their impact on Wikimedia

Expected outcome: Participants engage with experts and research to deepen the Movement’s understanding of key trends affecting Wikimedia and discuss how global developments impact regional contexts.

Goal 3: Propose and adapt strategies to stay relevant

Expected outcome: Participants discuss possible strategies to respond to these trends and generate first ideas that can be taken forward after the event.
