Wikimedia Italia/LimeSurvey/Requests/Wikimedia UK 2025/6 Editor Survey
Dear Wikimedia Italia LimeSurvey friends,
Please accept my survey creation request, to create a new awesome libre survey (and escape from Google Form).
This page was created from Wikimedia Italia/LimeSurvey.
This request is submitted to the kind attention of:
- @Valerio Bozzolan: (volunteer WMIT tech commission)
- @Dario Crespi (WMIT): (WMIT staff, not obliged to help, but happy to do so)
Thank you for your help! --Sara Thomas (WMUK) (talk) 11:24, 16 October 2025 (UTC)
Project
[edit]Wikimedia UK would like to create an editor survey, as a partner piece to our existing Community Leaders Survey, but looking to reach those with whom we have less contact. The purpose is to learn more about our community, and therefore improve our services. Our intention is to request a Central Notice on multiple wikis, to reach those editing from within the UK, as well as distributing it through our existing comms channels.
We've not run this kind of survey before, so I'm unsure as to how many replies we may get, however I'd be very happy if we got 500.
About me
[edit]I'm a Programme Manager at Wikimedia UK, with a remit for Scotland / Wales/ Northern Ireland, and volunteering across the UK. I can be reached at sara.thomas@wikimedia.org.uk.
My Commitment
[edit]I accept the limitations and data protection notes of Wikimedia Italia written in Wikimedia Italia/LimeSurvey.
We do intend to collect some demographic data (in line with what we collect in our Community Leaders Survey), but this will be very clearly marked as optional.
I've drafted a privacy notice specific to this survey, which I'll publish on our wmuk wiki - let me know if you'd like to see this beforehand.
Survey Info
[edit]I've not requested a Central Notice for a survey before, and I understand that there are special checks which must be made for this sort of thing, and so it can take some time - I've reflected this uncertainty in the dates below.
The survey SHOULD be ready before this date:
2025-11-15
(is this enough time? I hope it's enough time. please let me know if it's not!)
The survey SHOULD be destroyed after this date:
2026-05-01
Description
[edit]About Wikimedia UK: Wikimedia UK is the UK charity for the global Wikimedia movement. Our Vision is of a more informed, democratic and equitable society through open knowledge. Our Mission is to enable people in the UK to engage with open knowledge and access reliable information in order to develop their understanding of the world, and make informed decisions about issues that affect them.
About this survey: We are looking to better understand the Wikimedia community in the UK, in order to improve how we work with you. This survey is intended to be a partner to our annual Community Leaders Survey, which is aimed at those who volunteer or work to support activities on the Wikimedia projects (such as volunteer trainers and staff members at partner organisations) whereas with this survey, we’re looking to better understand the experiences and needs of those who volunteer primarily as editors, including those with extended rights on-wiki.
Open text
[edit]The purpose of this survey is to help us to better understand Wikimedia UK’s on-wiki community and its needs. We will also use the results to report back to our funders. We may use anonymised quotes from the results in these reports. Part of what we wish to find out is about the diversity of our community. We invite, but do not require, demographic information (including gender, and sexuality), this is entirely voluntary.
The survey is anonymous, in order to respect both our community’s privacy, and to encourage honest feedback. Depending on your responses, you may find that you de-anonymise yourself, however if any quotes are used publicly we will make all efforts to re-anonymise your answers (eg by removing names or other identifying information.).
Survey responses may be shared amongst Wikimedia UK staff and board members. Aggregated results, or anonymised quotes may be shared publicly. Survey results will be kept indefinitely, in aggregated and anonymous form, by WMUK, but the survey will be deleted from Limesurvey. We plan to share a blog with a summary of the results of the survey on our website once the survey is closed.
Should you have any questions about the survey please contact sara.thomas@wikimedia.org.uk

Notes
[edit]- ↑ Valerio: maybe better to just ask for the preferred public pronoun.
- ↑ a b c d e f Valerio: This question is too much personal and it allows easy w:data re-identification. The answer is a secret or potentially discriminatory information that we cannot store without putting the volunteer in potential serious danger, if this survey would be disclosed. See Wikimedia Italia/LimeSurvey#Limitations.
- ↑ Valerio: I'm absolutely not going to store volunteers sexual preferences in this survey. Wikimedians for software freedom#REQ-NO-IDENTIFICATION
- ↑ Better to ask data ranges instead of the exact age, to do not easily allow w:data re-identification.
