On-wiki organising
[edit]Governance and strategic planning, grants and reports
[edit]This year, we received a Core funding grant from the Wikimedia Foundation, to build our administrative capacity and kick start hiring key staff members. We also retained an additional USD 4′181·92 left over from Queering Wikipedia 2022 and 2023. All our monies are held by our fiscal sponsor Kiwix.
As if to prove our urgent need for these staff — an Executive director and a Membership coordinator, see Wikimedia LGBT+/Hiring for details of the roles — a combination of illness and volunteer capacity meant that we were unable to proceed to interviewing candidates until early 2025.
In 2024, however, we did advertise the 2 positions both around the Wikimedia Movement and on WordSpark’s social impact job board and Team CommUNITY at Article 19’s job board, extending the application deadline in order to allow for more applicants. We received 38 applicants for both the Executive Director and the Membership Coordinator vacancies.
We hoped to make an offer for an Exec director in early March 2025 and to hold interviews for the Membership coordinator shortly thereafter. As most of our core funding grant remained unspent, we were in discussions with the Foundation about extending the duration of this grant. (In April 2025, we subsequently hired both an Exec director and restructured our finances to expand the Membership coordinator role into a Director of programmes and community engagement. To make allowance for the delay in hiring, we also secured a 6-month extension.)
The original grant term was due to run until 30 May 2025 but, due to the delay in hiring we agreed with the Foundation to extend the grant until 20 November 2025, in order to make proper use of these funds. Information about 2025 activities will appear in our 2025 annual report.
From these funds, we have subsidised the programmes and events listed below. We also gave NGN 967’350 (USD 588·84) to the Bisi Alimi Foundation (Q61828370) to allow 3 people to attend WikiConference Nigeria 2024.
Funds as at 31 December 2024 (all figures in US dollars):
| Category | Budget | Spent | Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT infrastructure | $ 10 000·00 | $ 1 012·66 | $ 8 987·34 |

| Other contractors 1 | * $ 22 000·00 | $ 2 345·50 | $ 19 654·50 |
| Wiki Loves Pride and World AIDS Day 1 | * $ 11 000·00 | $ 3 255·42 | $ 7 744·58 |
| Sundry 2 | $ 2 181·92 | $ 964·63 | $ 1 217·29 |

| Total | $ 120 181·92 | $ 7 578·21 | $ 110 421·79 |

- $256·25 was spent on an unsuccessful fiscal sponsorship application
- $588·84 was given to the Bisi Alimi Foundation (Q61828370), as described above
- $119·54 was spent to advertise our job vacancies to a wider, more-diverse audience
Programmes and events
[edit]Wiki Loves Pride
[edit]Wiki Loves Pride is a global campaign to expand and improve LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages that has been operating annually since 2014. In 2024, Wikimedia LGBT+ invited Wikipedia users to participate by improving Wikipedia’s coverage of LGBT-related content. We had parallel events in the English and Spanish Wikipedia and on Wikimedia Commons.
- Meta page: Wiki Loves Pride 2024
- English: en:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Pride/2024
- Spanish: es:Wikipedia:Mes del Orgullo/2024. In the Spanish Wikipedia, we offered prizes for the users that created the most articles. In total, 194 articles were created or improved and we had 40 participating users. We also garnered the support of 13 other affiliates (full list can be found in the linked Spanish wikipage), some of which offered their own prizes for new queer content related to their countries.
- Commons: c:Subitón Orgullo 2024. In Wikimedia Commons, we ran a campaign for people to upload content related to pride parades around the world. In total, 717 images were uploaded.
World AIDS Day editathon
[edit]On 30 November 2024, we organised an online editathon for World AIDS Day. During it, we were joined by Dr Emily Garside, who gave a presentation about the historical importance of this day and its evolution over the past few decades. In total, 17 users registered for the editathon.

Wikimania 2024
[edit]During Wikimania 2024, which took place in Katowice, Poland, the user group organized two events. The first one was a talk that was part of the conference program called “How did the Spanish LGBT Wikiproject go from 5 to 750 new articles per year”, where UG members talked about the experience of the Spanish members of Wikimedia LGBT and how they were able to revive the local queer community of editors. The recording can be found here:
We also had a queer meetup of Wikimedia users, in which UG members talked about the initiatives of Wikimedia LGBT and welcomed new members. More detailed can be found here:
País del mes
[edit]The Spanish members of the user group continued in 2024 the initiative País del mes, which selects a country or territory each month for which users focus the creation and improvement of LGBT content on Wikimedia projects. During 2024, the initiative garnered 336 participations and 716 new or improved queer articles. Among the countries selected during this year, we had Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Ecuador and Venezuela. More information can be found here:
