Moroccan Women in STEM
[edit]This project is an initiative focused on highlighting the contributions of Moroccan women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), as well as in the Humanities. The primary goal is to create new Wikipedia articles about these notable women in multiple language versions of Wikipedia.
The project encourages community participation, inviting users to add their username to the list of contributors and to assist in creating articles or suggesting new elements for the topic tables. It also provides a mechanism for requesting the addition of new languages to the project if they are not already represented.
A preliminary check for notability (ensuring availability of sufficient, independent, and non-trivial coverage) has been conducted for the listed topics. However, participants are advised to re-verify the notability criteria on their respective local wikis before creating new articles.
The project is coordinated by Ideophagous.
Topics of Focus
[edit]The project's scope covers two main categories of expertise:
Technology and Hard Sciences: This section includes a diverse range of topics related to Moroccan women who have made significant contributions in STEM fields. The topics are identified by their respective Wikidata Q-items, indicating individuals prominent in areas such as engineering, scientific research, and technological innovation.

Challenges and Key Learnings
[edit]Challenges
[edit]- Account creation limitations: Wikimedia limited account creation to only 6 accounts per IP Address.
- Short Duration: As a single-day, 4-hour workshop, the time constraint might have limited the depth of training and the volume of contributions per participant.
- Reference Integration: The absence of data on "References Added" (not specified, implying potentially zero) is a significant challenge, as robust referencing is crucial for Wikipedia's reliability. This could indicate a need for more explicit training on citation practices.
- Sustained Engagement: Following up on the contributions and retaining new editors after a short, intensive workshop can be difficult without ongoing support structures.
Key Learnings
[edit]- Effective Short-Term Engagement: The workshop successfully mobilized 17 editors to create 12 new articles and edit 15 others within a limited timeframe, demonstrating the effectiveness of focused, hands-on events for initial content generation.
- Growth for Tamazight Wikipedia: The activity contributed directly to the expansion of Tamazight Wikipedia, a vital step for smaller language projects.
- Value of Practical Application: The focus on practical editing and content creation allowed participants to immediately apply their learning, which is often a strong motivator.
- Clear Organizational Structure: Having a dedicated team of organizers ensured the smooth execution of the workshop.

Achievements
[edit]Article Contributions
[edit]The contest launched with a total of 670 suggested articles and concluded with an impressive display of collaborative effort, culminating in a remarkable 3,322 total edits. This extensive initiative significantly expanded and improved content, leading to the net creation of 301 new articles out of 339 suggested for creation (88.79% progress) after 4 created articles (2.07% of initial creations) were deleted, alongside 329 enhancements to existing entries out of 331 suggested for enhancement (99.39% progress). Notably, 15 created articles (representing 4.75% of initial creations) were subsequently deleted. Overall, 630 articles were either created or enhanced, achieving a 94.03% completion rate against the suggested articles. In total, participants added an impressive 42,312,081 bytes of new content and integrated 36,688 references, enriching the overall knowledge base.
These significant achievements were primarily driven by two key contributing projects:
Among these, the "Books by Nobel-winning authors" initiative played a substantial role. From a total of 400 suggested articles (200 for creation and 200 for enhancement), this focused effort resulted in the net creation of 189 new articles (94.5% progress) after 4 created articles (2.07% of initial creations) were deleted, alongside 198 enhancements to existing entries (99% progress). With a combined 387 articles created or enhanced, this project achieved a 96.75% completion rate. It added a significant 24,737,315 bytes of content, contributing to 1,915 total edits and the inclusion of 20,904 references, greatly expanding the coverage of these influential works.
Similarly, the "Books by Moroccan authors" project demonstrated considerable activity. With 270 articles suggested for this category (139 for creation and 131 for enhancement), the dedicated effort saw the net creation of 112 new articles (80.58% progress) after 11 created articles (8.94% of initial creations) were deleted, and 131 enhancements to existing ones (100% progress). A total of 243 articles were either created or enhanced, reflecting a 90% completion rate for this project. This enriched the content by 17,574,766 bytes, accounted for 1,407 edits, and integrated 15,784 references, highlighting the growing representation of Moroccan literature.

Pageviews
[edit]Accumulated a total of 85,400 views from July 1, 2025, to August 30, 2025, showcasing the interest and reach of Moroccan and global literature on Wikipedia.
Challenges
[edit]The main challenge faced both organisers and participants was the deletion of articles about Books by Moroccan authors because of the strict notability policy on Arabic Wikipedia.
Challenges and Key Learnings
[edit]Challenges
[edit]- Notability Policy Enforcement: The most significant challenge was the deletion of 15 articles (4.75% of initial creations) in the overall contest, specifically highlighting strict notability policies on Arabic Wikipedia for "Books by Moroccan authors." This indicates a potential mismatch between local relevance and global notability standards or interpretation.
- Scope Management: Managing a contest with 670 suggested articles across two broad categories (Moroccan authors and Nobel-winning authors) over two months, while highly ambitious, could strain resources and participant focus.
- Maintaining Quality: With such a high volume of contributions (3,322 total edits, 42M bytes), ensuring consistent quality and adherence to Wikipedia's guidelines would be a continuous effort for organizers and the jury.
Key Learnings
[edit]- Exceptional Engagement and Productivity: The contest achieved remarkable success in terms of participation (22 editors, 11 newcomers) and output (301 net new articles, 630 articles created/enhanced, 42M bytes, 36.6K references), demonstrating a highly effective campaign model.
- Targeted Project Effectiveness: The breakdown into "Books by Nobel-winning authors" and "Books by Moroccan authors" proved effective in driving focused contributions, with both sub-projects achieving very high completion rates (96.75% and 90% respectively).
- Importance of Pre-Campaign Notability Review: The deletion challenge underscores the critical need for a thorough pre-campaign review of suggested topics against specific Wikipedia's notability policies, especially for culturally significant but potentially lesser-known works.
- High Readership Interest: The accumulated 85,400 pageviews highlight significant reader interest in literature-related content, confirming the value of such content creation initiatives.
- Newcomer Integration: The equal split of experienced and newcomer participants (11 each) shows successful strategies for onboarding and engaging new editors.

Challenges
[edit]Challenges
[edit]- Notability Policy Impact: The deletion of articles, particularly on Moroccan Arabic Wikipedia (40.17% of initial creations), highlights significant challenges with notability policies or their interpretation for Moroccan-related content, especially for emerging language Wikipedias.
- Variable Engagement: While Arabic Wikipedia saw strong engagement, Moroccan Arabic and Tamazight Wikipedias had fewer participants (6 and 13 respectively) and lower completion rates for suggested articles, indicating varying levels of community capacity and topic interest.
- Content Creation vs. Enhancement: The progress on enhancing existing articles was often lower than for creating new ones (e.g., Tamazight: 8.22% for enhancement), suggesting a potential preference or ease in starting new articles rather than improving existing, potentially complex ones.
- Language-Specific Sourcing: Finding reliable sources for Moroccan-related topics, especially in Darija and Tamazight, might be more challenging than for Arabic Wikipedia, impacting content quality and notability.
Key Learnings
[edit]- Multilingual Approach Benefits: Running parallel contests across multiple languages is effective for maximizing outreach and diverse content creation for a shared topic (Moroccan-related content).
- Importance of Clear Notability Guidance: The high deletion rates emphasize the critical need for explicit and consistent guidance on notability criteria tailored to each Wikipedia's policies, perhaps with specific examples for local content.
- Targeted Support for Emerging Wikipedias: The varied results across the three Wikipedias underscore the need for targeted support, resources, and mentorship programs for smaller or newer language communities to boost participation and content quality.
- Significant Content Contribution: Despite challenges, the contests collectively added substantial new content (e.g., 162 net new articles on Arabic Wikipedia, 70 on Moroccan Arabic, 86 on Tamazight) and significant bytes, enriching free knowledge.
- Engaging Newcomers: The participation of newcomers in all three contests indicates successful strategies for onboarding new editors, which is vital for community growth.

Documentation Project of Healthcare Institutions in Morocco
[edit]This project is dedicated to the comprehensive documentation of healthcare institutions across Morocco. Its primary objective is to create and enhance Wikipedia articles for institutions that meet notability criteria, in various language versions of Wikipedia.
The initiative is closely integrated with Wikidata's WikiProject Medicine, specifically focusing on hospitals in Morocco. This collaboration ensures that the data is structured and linked within the broader free knowledge ecosystem.
A comprehensive list of public and private healthcare institutions in Morocco is being compiled and utilized as part of this project. This list, powered by a module, encompasses numerous Wikidata items (Q-items) representing a wide array of medical facilities throughout the country. By documenting these institutions, the project aims to improve the accessibility and availability of information regarding Morocco's healthcare infrastructure for a global audience.
Challenges and Key Learnings
[edit]Challenges
[edit]- Notability Criteria: A significant challenge will be to consistently apply notability criteria across various Wikipedia language versions for a large number of healthcare institutions, ensuring that only those with sufficient coverage are documented.
- Data Accuracy and Updates: Healthcare information can change frequently. Ensuring the accuracy and up-to-date nature of data, especially when dealing with a comprehensive list of institutions, will be an ongoing challenge.
- Sourcing Reliability: Finding reliable, independent sources for every public and private healthcare institution, particularly smaller or less prominent ones, can be difficult.
- Cross-Language Consistency: Maintaining consistency in information and linking across different language Wikipedias and Wikidata requires meticulous coordination.
Key Learnings
[edit]- Structured Data Integration: The integration with Wikidata's WikiProject Medicine is a key learning, demonstrating the power of structured data for managing comprehensive information about healthcare institutions and enabling cross-language linking.
- Comprehensive Coverage: The project's aim for "comprehensive documentation" highlights the value of systematic approaches to address content gaps on a national scale, making vital public information more accessible.
- Collaborative Potential: Such a large-scale project benefits greatly from collaborative efforts, leveraging a community of editors to cover a vast number of institutions.
- Improving Public Access to Information: By documenting healthcare institutions, the project directly contributes to improving public access to critical information about medical facilities in Morocco, benefiting both local and global audiences.
- Module-Based Efficiency: Utilizing a module to power the list of institutions suggests an efficient, programmatic approach to managing and displaying large datasets, which can be a key learning for similar documentation projects.
Moroccan Documentation Program
[edit]The Moroccan Documentation Program is a Wikimedia Morocco initiative conducted from 20 November to 20 December 2025. Its primary goal was to enrich free knowledge about Morocco on Wikimedia projects by addressing the significant lack of visual documentation for rural areas, historical landmarks, and cultural heritage on Wikipedia.
The program encouraged contributors to integrate freely licensed images from Wikimedia Commons into relevant Wikipedia articles and simultaneously improve the overall quality of the content. Key objectives included bridging the digital content gap between urban centers and underrepresented rural or mountainous regions, promoting Moroccan tangible and intangible heritage, supporting rural and mountain tourism, enhancing article quality through relevant images, and encouraging documentation best practices.
Over the one-month timeframe, the program saw participation from over 7 contributors. Their efforts resulted in the improvement of more than 30 existing articles, the creation of over 5 new articles, and the addition of over 50 images to articles, all sourced from freely licensed content on Wikimedia Commons. These achievements significantly enhanced the visual and informational quality of Moroccan-related content on Wikipedia and increased the visibility of previously underrepresented regions.
Challenges encountered included the limited availability of high-quality images for specific regions, uneven contributor participation across different topics, and time constraints faced by participants during the campaign period.
Key lessons learned from this initiative emphasize that visual documentation greatly improves article quality and the reader experience. It also highlighted that structured campaigns are effective in motivating contributors and improving coordination, and that there is a continuous need for strategic partnerships to expand image availability.
Future recommendations stemming from this program suggest organizing similar campaigns regularly, encouraging local photography initiatives to further enrich Wikimedia Commons, strengthening outreach efforts to contributors from underrepresented regions, and combining documentation campaigns with edit-a-thons and training sessions for greater impact.
The program was successfully coordinated by رشيدة رقي, DERDAKI ILIAS, and نجية بنت محمد.
Moroccan Cities and Monuments Identification Campaign"
[edit]The "Moroccan Cities and Monuments Identification Campign" was a volunteer initiative by Wikimedia Morocco, active from 24 December 2025, to 24 January 2026. Launched in conjunction with Morocco hosting the Africa Cup of Nations, its core objective was to develop and enhance Arabic Wikipedia content related to Moroccan cities, historical sites, architectural monuments, and cultural and natural heritage. This aimed to showcase Morocco's tourism and cultural assets and bolster its digital presence. The campaign specifically sought to create new articles on tourist cities and landmarks, and improve existing ones through better documentation, images, internal links, categories, and references.
Participation was open to all Wikipedia users, with an emphasis on adhering to core policies like copyright, encyclopedic style, and reliance on reliable sources. Articles had to be reserved before work commenced. Out of 117 suggested articles covering diverse topics from sports stadiums and major cities to historical sites and cultural elements, 8 articles were completed and 5 were in progress, demonstrating active engagement in approximately 11% of the topics. A total of 6 unique users actively contributed to reserving and working on these articles. The campaign was organized by رشيدة رقي and راشراش.
Challenges and Key Learnings
[edit]Challenges
[edit]- Limited Completion Rate: A significant challenge was the relatively low completion rate (8 articles completed out of 117 suggested), indicating difficulties in mobilizing a large number of contributions within the one-month timeframe.
- Editor Engagement: While 6 users actively participated, sustaining broader and deeper engagement across the extensive list of suggested articles proved challenging.
- Resource Intensiveness: Documenting a wide array of cities and monuments, particularly for new articles, demands considerable research, sourcing, and content creation effort per editor.
Key Learnings
[edit]- Themed Campaigns Drive Focus: Organizing the campaign around Moroccan cities and monuments provided a clear, patriotic theme that resonated with some editors and aimed to address a specific content gap.
- Potential for Cultural Promotion: The initiative highlighted the potential of Wikimedia projects to promote national tourism and cultural heritage, especially when linked to major events like the Africa Cup of Nations.
- Importance of Clear Guidelines: The emphasis on Wikipedia policies for participation underscores the commitment to content quality and reliability.
- Need for Broader Outreach and Longer Duration: The outcome suggests that for comprehensive coverage of such a vast topic, future campaigns might benefit from a longer duration, more intensive outreach to a larger pool of editors, or more structured support mechanisms to boost completion rates.
The campaign successfully initiated efforts to enrich Arabic Wikipedia's content on Morocco's rich urban, historical, and cultural landscape, aligning with efforts to boost the country's digital presence and highlight its heritage, despite facing challenges in broad content completion.
