[edit]The "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" is a flagship Wikimedia Foundation program designed to equip teachers and learners with essential 21st-century Media and Information Literacy (MIL) skills, aligning with UNESCO's recognition of these competencies. Building on a 2020 pilot in Bolivia, Morocco, and the Philippines, the program aims to responsibly integrate Wikipedia into educational practices to foster critical thinking, information evaluation, and knowledge contribution.

Between January 30 and February 1, 2026, Anass Sedrati, member of the user group, participated in the Wikimedia Futures Lab, a convening co-organized by the Wikimedia Foundatio and Wikimedia Deutschland, to discuss the future of the movement amidst the various challenges posed by, among others, declining trust in online information, the rise of AI-generated content and shifting regulatory landscapes.
The event spanned across three days, with a wide range of points discussed during each of them. Among the key questions that guided the work were:
- How will the spread of AI impact human-generated content across the internet, now and over the next 5 years?
- Where and how will people find information on the internet, now and over the next 5 years?
- What are contributors across the internet looking for, and how might that change in the next 5 years?
Unlike traditional Wikimedia conferences, this gathering focused more on the active participation of the members present, by taking part in group discussions with different scopes and aims. On the first day, the focus was on identifying the most important trends impacting the Wikimedia movement, before generating hypotheses in the second day, on what could be some suggestions to address them. Finally, the third day was dedicated to implementation plans, by suggesting experiments on how to test the existing hypotheses, and defining the way forward for each participant in order to address the identified challenges.
As an active participant in the event, Anass took part in the various discussions, providing input and exchanging views and experiences with fellow Wikimedians from different regions and backgrounds.
