Wikiexpedition - Prilep Basin

The third Wikiexpedition in 2026 took place from 7 to 9 August 2026 in the Prilep Basin, with the aim of documenting the remaining underrepresented villages around Prilep, as well as several settlements in the municipalities of Krivogaštani and Dolneni.

During the first day, the team visited numerous villages in the southern and central parts of the Prilep Basin, including Lopatica, Podmol, Marul, Kanatlarci, Erekovci, Topolčani, Trojkrsti, Čepigovo, Veselčani, Zagorani, Alinci, Šeleverci, Malo Ruvci, Berovci, Galičani, and Kadino Selo. Churches, mosques, tekkes, schools, railway facilities, and public buildings were photographed. The team also documented Staro Bonče and the remains of the ancient city of Styberra, while drone photography provided aerial views of several locations.

The second day covered Selce, Volkovo, Prilepec, Leništa, Oreovec, Krstec, Star Prisad, Nov Prisad, and Dabnica. The team documented churches, monasteries, archaeological sites, lakes, monuments, and landscapes. Notable locations included Prilep Lake, the former village of Pešterica, the Sivec marble quarry, the Church of St. Athanasius in Star Prisad, and the remains of the Derven mountain lodge.

The expedition also documented abandoned or endangered heritage sites, including the former cinema hall in Topolčani and the World War II memorial near Dabnica, dedicated to local residents executed during the second world war and now surrounded by waste from a nearby landfill.

In total, the expedition documented 24 previously undocumented villages and one historical village. The team travelled more than 500 kilometres, producing a substantial collection of new photographs, including aerial images taken by drone.

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2026 results

“Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2026” was a contest dedicated to enriching existing articles on the Macedonian-language Wikipedia with relevant photographs and other visual illustrations. Many articles contain high-quality and useful information but still lack illustrations that could complement their content and help readers better understand the topic.

With this goal in mind, Wikimedia MKD once again gave editors the opportunity to contribute to the contest while also competing for prizes. The contest was held from 1 July to 31 August 2026, with clearly defined criteria for participation and scoring.

The prizes were provided for the most prolific participants, who have added an illustration of at least 100 different articles on Wikipedia in the Macedonian language. Points were calculated according to the principle: one article one point for the illustrations, regardless of how many illustrations were placed in that article. It is important to note that illustrations were inserted on already existing articles, newly created articles for the purpose of inserting photos were not taken into account. There was no limit to the number of illustrations that could be used. The photo that was used had to be uploaded under a free license or in the public domain. Contributors also included the #WPWPMK entry on every save change when they added an illustration, and on every article they added an illustration to. So the award winners are:

In total 8 editors participated and 2352 valid illustrations were added to the existing articles.

Wiki Loves Film – Collaboration with MakeDox Film Festival

As part of the GLAM program of Wikimedia MKD and the international initiative Wiki Loves Film, Wikimedia MKD continued its collaboration with the MakeDox - Creative Documentary Film Festival in Skopje, Macedonia. The collaboration aims to document important cultural events in the field of film and make freely accessible visual content available through Wikimedia projects.

This year, the MakeDox Film Festival was held from 20 to 27 August 2026. MakeDox is one of the most recognized documentary film festivals in Macedonia, with international reach and an important role in promoting creative documentary filmmaking and bringing together filmmakers, artists, and audiences.

During this year's festival, Wikimedia MKD's GLAM Coordinator participated in the festival and documented its activities as part of the Wiki Loves Film initiative. Throughout the festival, photographs were taken of screenings, events, guests, participants, and the overall festival atmosphere.

As a result of this activity, approximately 430 photographs from the MakeDox Film Festival were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The photographs are freely licensed and available for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, contributing to the visual documentation of the festival and contemporary cultural life in Macedonia.

The participation also provided an opportunity to continue strengthening the cooperation between Wikimedia MKD and the MakeDox Film Festival, while promoting the importance of free knowledge and freely accessible cultural content.

Through its participation in MakeDox 2026, Wikimedia MKD continued its efforts to document cultural and artistic events in Macedonia and make them more visible and accessible to a wider audience. Activities such as this contribute to enriching Wikimedia Commons with valuable visual material while strengthening long-term cooperation with cultural institutions and festivals.

Editing Days

Editing days is an activity that lasts for the whole year in organization of Wikimedia MKD. Each Tuesday and Thursday different topics are given and the participants create or improve existing articles. In August 2026 there were in total 8 editing days, where participants edited on different topics in order to enrich the content of Wikipedia. The editing days and the topics were:

  • 4.8.2026 - Flax Species
  • 6.8.2026 - Ancient Egyptian Dynasties
  • 11.8.2026 - Art in the 1820s and 1830s
  • 13.8.2026 - Nobel Laureates in Chemistry from 1926 to 1950
  • 18.8.2026 - Rivers in New Zealand
  • 20.8.2026 - Literature in the 1880s and 1890s
  • 25.8.2026 - Ministries of Serbia
  • 27.8.2026 - Towns and Villages in the Municipality of Grosuplje

Cumulatively, 2 different users took part in these calls and edited. In total, 18 new articles were created during the editing days in August 2026.

Starting from January 2026, awards for the Editing Weekends and Editing days project will be granted on a monthly basis. Each month, the most active and productive participants will be recognized for their contributions. This change aims to further motivate continuous participation and encourage sustained improvement of Macedonian Wikipedia content throughout the year.

Editing Weekends

Editing weekends is another project that is organized during the whole year. During weekends (Saturday and Sunday) user are welcomed to take part in this project activity and improve or enrich Macedonian Wikipedia content. During these weekends, the participants are expected to edit articles on given topics. In August 2026 the following editing weekends were organized:

  • 1-2 August - Four-thousanders
  • 8-9 August - Former castles
  • 15-16 August - Magicians
  • 22-23 August - 21st-century conflicts
  • 29-30 August - Geranium species

In total, during these weekends there were 4 different users editing on the given topics and they created 21 new articles on the Macedonian Wikipedia.

Starting from January 2026, awards for the Editing Weekends and Editing days project will be granted on a monthly basis. Each month, the most active and productive participants will be recognized for their contributions. This change aims to further motivate continuous participation and encourage sustained improvement of Macedonian Wikipedia content throughout the year.

Editing days and editing weekends results

During August 2026, Wikimedia MKD continued the organization of regular Editing Days and Editing Weekends as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the quality and quantity of content on the Macedonian-language Wikipedia. These activities provided structured opportunities for community members to create new articles and enhance existing ones across a variety of topic areas.

Editing days were held regularly throughout the month, taking place twice per week. Each session was dedicated to a predefined theme, encouraging participants to focus their editing efforts on specific subject areas and contributing to the systematic enrichment of Wikipedia content.

Editing weekends were organized during weekends, allowing volunteers to dedicate additional time to Wikipedia editing beyond the regular weekday sessions. Each weekend focused on a thematic topic, enabling participants to explore and develop content in greater depth.

So the results of August 2026 are as follow:

  • A total of 4 editors actively participated in the Editing Days and Editing Weekends.
  • Participants collectively created 35 articles and improved 3 articles on the Macedonian-language Wikipedia.

Starting from January 2026, awards for the Editing Days and Editing Weekends project are granted on a monthly basis. Each month, the most active and productive participants are recognized for their contributions during that specific period. For August 2026, the award for the most active participant was granted to P.Nedelkovski

These results highlight the positive impact of sustained community engagement and demonstrate the effectiveness of structured editing activities in expanding free knowledge in the Macedonian language. Wikimedia MKD remains committed to continuing these initiatives and encouraging broader participation in the future.
