This is the annual report of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria supported by the group. This report includes all activities of the user group from October 2019 to September 2020.

September 2019: Wiki Loves Monument 2019[edit]

The local version of Wiki Loves Monument 2019 was organized by Wikimedia User Group Nigeria in September 2019.Instead of the 30 people expected for the event, over 48 photo enthusiasts participated in the program. At the end of the contest, 24 new entrants were introduced to the contest and over 2500 images were uploaded to commons during the contest. See the link here

November 2019: WikiIndaba 2019[edit]

In 2019, the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc. organized WikiIndaba conference 2019. The conference took place in Abuja, Nigeria from 8 to 10 November 2019, funded by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and supported by Google LLC. The conference despite having a reduced number of participants when compares to Wiki Indaba 2018 has the most diverse mix of participants. We had participants from at least 23 countries and female participants constituted more than 40% of the total participants. We also have the participation of WMF staff and other mission-aligned organizations. This diversity made the conference more interesting. We improved the diversity of the conference when compared to the 2016 and 2018 editions

December 2019: Wiki Loves Africa 2020[edit]

Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) is an annual contest where anyone across Africa can contribute media that is relevant to their experience to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. The team for the year 2020 was "Transportation". The year contest helps the community to showcase our diversity in terms of the strength and wideness of our community. The year 2020 event involved, Wikimedia Fan Clubs and hubs in Nigeria namely: the University of Ilorin, University of Ibadan, Lagos State University, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and Wikimedia Hub Abuja.

Highlights

December 2019: Finding Glam/Wikidata Training for Librarians in Nigeria[edit]

Finding GLAM is an initiative by Wikimedia Sverige (Sweden), UNESCO and the Wikimedia Foundation to build a truly worldwide database of cultural heritage institutions and their collections on Wikipedia. In Nigeria, Wikimedia User Group in Nigeria in collaboration with Nimbe Library at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and Oyo State Chapter of Agriculture introduced Wikidata to Librarian in the mentioned institutions. Over 50 librarians participated in the program.

January 2020: Art+Feminism+International World Women's Day 2020[edit]

The Art+Feminism+ International Women's Day 2020 was designed to take place in Nigerian in conjunction with Aloy Awards and Exquisite Magazine, Wikimedia Fan Club at the University of Ibadan and Lagos State University. The first part of the project for the hosting of International Women's Day involving Eloy Awards, Exquisite Magazine, and Swedish Embassy has been concluded while the protracted strike between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) in Nigeria which led to the closure of all universities in Nigeria has affected the completion of this project. We have requested from the grant for the extension of this project pending the resolution of the crisis between the parties.

Highlight(s)

  • The Swedish embassy and Eloy Award and Exquisite Magazine and Wikimedia User Group Nigeria hosted the International Women's day 2020 in Lagos Nigeria to celebrate Nigerian women.

March 2020: WikiGap Challenge 2020 in Nigeria[edit]

The WikiGap online challenge was hosted in Nigeria by Wikimedia User Group Nigeria in collaboration with the Swedish embassy in Nigeria, African Women in the Media, and Wiki in Africa. The online challenge was divided into phases; 3-day virtual training and 4-weeks edit a thon. Over 500 articles were added to Wikipedia in over 7 languages.

April 2020: Visibility Project- East Africa[edit]

The Visibility project was jointly conceptualized by Wikipedia User Group Nigeria and African Women in Media, first, to enhance the capacity development of African women journalists on digital content development and secondly, to increase the visibility of African women on Wikipedia. The maiden started in April with training and mentoring of 200 female journalists from East Africa by selected Wikimedian from Africa. The project contributed over 50 new articles about African women journalists from Africa.

May 2020: Black Climate Rights Edit a thon[edit]

Inspired from the story of Vanessa Nakate which broke the internet as a result of being cropped out from a photo which raises a lot of concerns and the impact the creation of a Wikipedia page for her did to amplify her voice which has led to the creation of other African climate activists Wikipedia page which include Adenike Oladosu, Maria Auma, and Elizabeth, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria hosted series of training and edit a thon to improve visibility of notable climate activists from Nigeria. Events were held in Ibadan and Lagos.

July 2020: Visibility Project(Labour Migration in Africa)[edit]

It is an ongoing program and the second edition of the Visibility project in Africa. The project is supported by the African Union, International Labour Organization, UN Migration, and the Swedish Embassy. It was scheduled to kick off in July. However, due to bureaucracy among the concerned organizations involved in the project, it didn't start until November 16th. 100 African female journalists across Africa will be trained and mentored over three weeks on how to contribute to Wikipedia. The training and mentoring program will be organized in English, Arabic, and French for the participants from the various community.

September 2020: Decolonize the Internet[edit]

This program is supported by Goethe-Institut to work with Wikimedia affiliate across Africa to encourage Africans to take up the initiative of writing their stories by themselves. In Nigeria, the project involves the training of interested applicants on various Wikipedia modules and edit a thon. The program will end in December 2020.
