Introduction

The Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin is a campus-based Wikimedia community operating under the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. Established in 2018, the club serves as a platform for students, staff, and volunteers of the University of Ilorin to contribute to Wikimedia projects while promoting free knowledge, digital literacy, and open collaboration.

The club introduces members to projects including Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikivoyage, Wikiquote, Wikiversity, and Yoruba Wikipedia, providing training that enables participants to become long-term contributors to the Wikimedia movement.

Since its establishment, the club has become one of the most active Wikimedia communities in Nigeria, organizing edit-a-thons, photography campaigns, workshops, leadership programmes, outreach events, and collaborations with academic departments, student associations, and external organizations.

History

The Wikimedia Fan Club, University of Ilorin was officially launched in June 2018, following the registration of the association by the University of Ilorin Student Affairs Division earlier that year. The club was established as part of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria's initiative to increase awareness and participation in Wikimedia projects across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The initiative emerged from the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria's campus outreach programme, which sought to address the low awareness of Wikipedia editing among Nigerian students while encouraging them to become contributors rather than merely consumers of free knowledge.

The University of Ilorin quickly developed into one of the leading Wikimedia communities in Nigeria through regular trainings, mentorship programmes, and community-led events. Over the years, leadership transitions have ensured continuity while allowing successive student executives to introduce new programmes and partnerships that expanded the club's activities beyond traditional Wikipedia editing.

Today, the club continues to operate as a sustainable student community where experienced Wikimedians mentor new contributors and support participation in both local and international Wikimedia campaigns.

Mission

The club aims to: Promote awareness of Wikimedia projects within the University of Ilorin. Recruit and train new Wikimedia contributors. Improve the quality and quantity of knowledge relating to Nigeria and Africa on Wikimedia projects. Encourage responsible use of free knowledge resources. Develop leadership among student Wikimedians. Support multilingual knowledge creation, particularly through Nigerian language Wikimedia projects. Promote open licensing, digital literacy, and collaborative knowledge production. Growth and Community Development

Since its inception, the Wikimedia Fan Club has evolved from a small campus initiative into a vibrant volunteer community.

The club has also established a mentoring culture in which experienced editors guide newcomers through their first contributions before helping them participate in larger international Wikimedia campaigns.

Successive executive committees have maintained the continuity of the club by organizing leadership handovers, strategic planning sessions, and recruitment drives for new members.

Objectives

  • To promote the use of and contributions to Wikimedia projects by among the students of the University of Ilorin.
  • To encourage campus/undergraduate photographers to contribute to Commons
  • Providing a space for undergraduates who are/will engage(d) in Wikimedia to collaborate on projects, discuss strategies, and socialize with each other.
  • To facilitate programs that will achieve these.

Proposed Activities

  • Organizing Edit-a-thons for the English Wikipedia at least thrice in each semester where new editors are recruited and trained while others develop more as Wikipedians.
  • Organizing Simplify Wiki 1.0 to encourage attention to the Simple English Wikipedia (At this event, more than 1000 Simple English Wikipedia Articles bordering around Nigerian/African topics will be created/improved).
  • Wiki Meets Campus Photographers: An event in attempt to orient campus photographers on Commons; how they can contribute and why they should.
  • The Wikimedia Campus Survey, University of Ilorin : Finding out what lecturers and students know, feel, utilize, dislike, etc. about Wikimedia projects will help us get a true feedback about how the foundation's endeavors are viewed. We hope this survey results will serve as feedbacks and strategic maps for Wikimedia.
