Date: 4 June 2025

To: Wikimedia Affiliates and the Global Wikimedia Community

Dear Wikimedia Affiliates and Community Members,

We are excited to announce our intent to form the Wikimedia User Group the Gambia, a new Wikimedia User Group dedicated to promoting Wikimedia projects and open knowledge across The Gambia. This user group aims to raise awareness, foster local content creation, and support community engagement with Wikimedia platforms through training, partnerships, and outreach. Mission

Our mission is to increase the representation of Gambian people, languages, places, and culture across Wikimedia projects. We are committed to enhancing awareness and participation in the Gambia by organizing workshops, edit-a-thons, school and university outreach, and training programs that empower individuals to contribute knowledge in areas that reflect our society and heritage.

Focus Area

[edit]

The group will focus on the following key areas:
Languages: English, Mandinka, Fula (Fulfulde), Wolof, and other local languages.
Themes: History, culture, education, biographies, settlements, heritage, and language preservation.
Geographical Region: We are based in the Gambia and plan to engage communities in all regions.
. We will work to bridge the digital knowledge gap by collaborating with libraries, schools, universities, and cultural institutions.

Current Location and Regional Activities

[edit]

Wikimedia User Group the Gambia is currently located in Banjul, with activities spanning the entire country. We aim to collaborate with local and regional affiliates, including those in West Africa, to ensure that The Gambia is actively represented in the Wikimedia movement. We will also seek partnerships with civil society, educators, and cultural institutions to maximize our impact.

Call for Collaboration

[edit]

We warmly welcome collaboration and support from other affiliates and individuals across the Wikimedia movement. We believe that working together with established user groups in the region: including affiliates from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, and others will help build stronger connections and shared knowledge resources.

If you would like to learn more about our user group, share feedback, or explore opportunities to collaborate, please contact us at gayobah13@yahoo.com. We are excited to be part of this global movement and look forward to contributing meaningfully to free knowledge for all.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Gayo Bah
