Wikimedia for Educators UAE
[edit]Wikimedia for Educators UAE is a professional development programme designed to empower educators in the United Arab Emirates to integrate Wikimedia projects into education. The programme focuses on developing teachers’ skills in contributing to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons, and using these platforms as educational tools in classrooms.The program focused on digital literacy, information verification, collaborative knowledge production, and the pedagogical use of Wikipedia, Wikisource, and Wikidata.
Programme Goals
[edit]- To introduce educators to Wikimedia movement values and policies
- To train educators in editing Wikipedia and contributing to Wikisource
- To promote responsible digital citizenship and information literacy
- To enable teachers to design Wikimedia-based classroom activities
- To create a sustainable educator community in the UAE
Programme Overview
[edit]A group of educators in the UAE dedicated their weekends to professional learning and became part of the Wikimedia Educators initiative. The programme aims to answer the key question: How can Wikimedia projects be effectively integrated into education?
A total of 13 educators from different schools in the Emirate of Sharjah were selected through a survey process. Following the selection, a WhatsApp group was created to ensure continuous communication, peer support, and coordination.
Programme Development and Support
[edit]- Akbar Ali - Project lead : This programme was initiated and developed with the support of the Wikimedians of UAE User Group.
Several community members contributed to the success of this programme:
- User:Serine Ben Brahim —Director of the Wikimedian of the User group provided valuable guidance through online planning meetings
- User:Duaa Khidir — Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator, The Wikimedians of UAE User Group supported programme planning and coordination
- User:Iyhab1994 — Research and Data Analysis Lead assisted with programme development
- Zubair coordinated participant communication, venue arrangements, and event logistics, and designed programme posters
Three online planning meetings were conducted with the Wikimedians of UAE leaders to ensure the effective implementation of the programme.
