Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network/2024
- A version of this report is at Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy/Implementation/Affiliate health criteria/Reports/2024/Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network
The Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network sustained itself in 2024 in ways that are comparable to previous years. It remains a casual organization for conversation among Wikimedians in Residence. "Wikimedians in Residence" are Wikimedians who are professionally engaged by a knowledge institution such as a museum, university, or research institute. They have the goal of sharing knowledge from their organization across Wikimedia projects. This group encourages peer-to-peer communication and support among people in these positions.
2024 was different in that there were fewer organized virtual meetups, as there have been in all previous years. Part of this is the rise of the new Global GLAM Calls as a monthly community conversation, fostered as a collaboration among European GLAMwiki Coordinators, WREN, and the GLAM Wiki Global Telegram group. It is of some concern that there was a lack of more online activity, as technical platform work to support GLAM activities has been limited. The work of Mary Mark Ockerbloom in the "Wikipedia Workbook for Cultural Institutions" and the GLAM CSI project by Andrew Lih were significant outputs supported by the WREN community, who gave feedback and participated in contributing content to these projects.
Member participation in Wikimedia events was typical. The amount and type of third-party media coverage which this group got was typical. The group has no budget and no shared scarce resources. The group has an informal wiki-like collaborative leadership and decision-making processes goals, or projects, to be visible as a place where any Wikimedian in Residence can present themselves as available to talk to peers.
