This report summarizes activities for the Wikimedians of Chicago User Group for the calendar years 2024-2025. More details on the events listed below can be found on their respective pages.

2024

2024 was the year in which group activity was first revived with a meetup on 26 October. Despite the long hiatus, 6 local Wikipedians attended with several others expressing interest in future meetups, including both old and new members.

Members attending decided on a bimonthly meetup schedule. Another casual meetup was held on 14 December.

2025

On January 19 2025, members celebrated Wikipedia Day with a Wikipedia Day themed meetup, including an introduction to editing Wikipedia, WikiJeopardy, a lightning talk from User:Nick Number, and cake.

More casual meetups happened in March and May. In July, we hosted a Wiknic at Welles Park, enjoying good weather as we discussed the joys of free information for all.

Our September meetup was held at Wiki Week 2025 at UIC. As of writing the November meetup will be another casual meetup with date/time TBA.

Membership and future plans

The user group currently has about 7-10 active users, with participation in local events reaching around 30 attendees, as in the Wikipedia Day meetup.

In 2026, we hope to organize more wide-reaching events with greater impact by hosting editathons, workshops, and photowalks in addition to casual meetups. More on the proposed timeline of 2026 events here.
