Overview

[edit]

The Wikimedians of Ethiopia User Group is a vibrant community dedicated to enriching Wikimedia projects with Ethiopian perspectives, amplifying Ethiopia’s rich culture, languages, and history globally. Since our inception, we’ve fostered participation through impactful events, including our first edit-a-thon in September 2024, which onboarded new contributors via the outreach dashboard, and our inaugural Wikipedia workshop in Addis Ababa in September 2023, focused on enhancing articles.

Our community has grown steadily, collaborating with partners like National ID Ethiopia, which provided a venue for our workshop, and Open Foundation West Africa for initiatives like the Africa Wiki Challenge 2025. We engage in community outreach, collaborating with photography communities for events like Wiki Loves Folklore 2025, and participated in WikiIndaba 2024 in Johannesburg, gaining insights into preserving African languages digitally. By supporting content creation in Amharic, Oromo, Tigrinya, and other Ethiopian languages, we address knowledge gaps and preserve cultural heritage.

We updated our name from ‘Wikimedia Community User Group Ethiopia’ to avoid confusion with another group, clarifying our mission to promote Ethiopian content. We are pursuing official recognition by the Wikimedia Foundation to further strengthen our impact
