Wikimedians of Iowa User Group

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Wikimedians of Iowa User Group is a Wikimedia user group which was recognized in August 2016 composed of editors of Wikimedia projects in the US State of Iowa. It seeks to have activities in as many regions of Iowa as possible, starting in the capital city of Des Moines and expanding as feasible. Any Wikimedia editor in good standing is welcome and encouraged to join.

Objectives and activities[edit]

Our objective is to expand Iowan contributions toward Wikimedia projects, including, but not limited to, coverage of topics relating to Iowa. We plan to do this by holding events such as editathons and meetups, by reaching out to local educational institutions, libraries, and other resources (GLAM), by holding group sharing/training sessions for using and editing Wikimedia projects more effectively, and by holding competitions (such as photo competitions).

The creation of a Wikimedia user group for Iowa was initially suggested at a Wikimedia DC editathon in 2016. After some discussion between Iowa residents at #wikimedia-iowaconnect, this group was created and an application sent to AffCom, and in August 2016, the Affiliations Committee approved the group.

Contact information[edit]

Main discussion and coordination of this group occurs at #wikimedia-iowaconnect. A public mailing list, mail:wikimedia-us-ia is also available (
