Overview
Throughout the period from October 2024 to September 2025, the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group actively participated in a wide range of initiatives and events, furthering its mission of promoting open knowledge and strengthening community collaboration. This annual report provides a comprehensive overview of the User group's significant achievements and contributions during this time.
This is the seventh year of the user group. During this period, the user group received support from Wikimedia Foundation for the Wikimedians of Kerala Anniversary Programme.
Activites during 2024
Wikimedia Workshop Thrissur (12th-13th Oct 2024)
In associated with Wiki Loves Onam campaign a two-day workshop for students and Wikimedians was organised at Vidya Academy of Science and Technology, Thrissur. The workshop focused on introducing participants to various Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and other sister projects. 35 participants participated in the workshop and contributed to Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
As part of Wiki Loves Onam 2024 campaign in the month of October the video documentation work was completed. 10 videos was published and this video documentation features a collection of videos that capture key events and customs associated with the festival, including iconic performances like Pulikkali, boat races such as the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, traditional dances like Kummattikali, and many other unique aspects of the Onam celebration.

Through this initiative, the team captured video footage of key Onam-related events, with the aim of preserving these traditions and making them accessible to a wider audience via open knowledge platforms. Wikidata's 12th birthday celebration
We Celebrated Wikidata's 12th Birthday online and offline this time.
Wikidata Workshop and Birthday Celebration at Wayanad (16th-17th Nov 2024)
Wikidata birthday celebrations and a 1-day workshop for students and Wikimedians was organized in Wayanad.
Wikidata Twelfth Birthday - India Datathon (Oct 13th-Nov 16th 2024)
The Wikimedians of Kerala User Group actively participated in the India-wide Wikidata 12th Birthday data-thon, leading week 1 (Hospitals & Health Centers in India). The month-long campaign in Wikidata focused on improving India-related properties, adding statements, locations, images, and references. Participants helped create and enhance thousands of Wikidata entries, notably supporting the successful proposal of the Health Facility Registry ID property. Overall, the event united 50+ contributors, resulting in 24.7k+ edits, 14.3k unique items improved, 1.1K new items, and 21k references added, strengthening the quality and accessibility of India-related data on Wikidata. It brought together the Indian Wikimedia communities, regional groups, and individual contributors to improve and enhance India-related content on Wikidata.

Wikidata's 12th birthday celebration organized by Wikimedians of Kerala User Group along with Kochi FOSS. A presentation and small cake cutting was done during the event.
# Wayanad, Kerala (17th Nov 2024)
UG have organized the birthday celebration and a workshop during the 12th birthday celebration of Wikidata, in collaboration with OSM Kerala during SotM Kerala. It was held at the College of Veterinary Science (KVASU, Pookode), the event included sessions on Wikidata fundamentals, hands-on data contribution, and workshops demonstrating the integration of Wikidata with OpenStreetMap to enrich geospatial data. The gathering fostered collaboration among Wikimedians and OSM community members, with guided editing activities, practical games, and knowledge-sharing. Participants also celebrated Wikidata’s 12th birthday with a cake-cutting, making the event both productive and memorable for all attendees.
Malayalam Wikisource Workshop at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba (22nd Nov 2024)
A hands-on workshop was conducted at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba on November month, introducing students and staff to Malayalam Wikisource. Participants learned digital book digitization, OCR, proofreading, and uploading to Wikisource. The event fostered practical skills in free knowledge sharing, and several texts from local collections were successfully digitized and made available online.
Wiki Loves Birds India 2024 at KAU (6th-8th Dec 2024)
As part Wiki Loves Birds India 2024 campaign an event was organised at Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. It has brought together 124 participants, including students and birdwatchers, for three days of bird counts, workshops, and uploads to Wikimedia Commons. Ten teams surveyed ten locations on campus and documented 133 bird species, with 288 checklists submitted to eBird. The event successfully promoted bird documentation and digital conservation skills among the participants.
Wikimedia Technical workshop and Hackathon (12th-13th Dec 2024)
The Wikimedia Technical workshop and Hackathon at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering was organised with the collaboration of , brought together students and tech mentors for hands-on learning about Wikimedia projects, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata and MediaWiki APIs. The event was organized by the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group in collaboration with Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation and College FOSS club. The event included introductory sessions, technical onboarding, and practical technical challenges. Mentors guided participants through MediaWiki APIs and Phabricator, encouraging collaborative problem-solving. The event fostered technical skill development and strengthened the link between open knowledge platforms and the local student community, with enthusiastic student participation and interactive workshops throughout the two-day event.
Malayalam Wikipedia 22nd Birthday Celebration (21st-28th Dec 2024)

The 22nd birthday celebration of Malayalam Wikipedia was celebrated in December 2024, marking over two decades of contribution, growth, and enrichment of the Malayalam language on the internet.
# Bhubaneswar, Odisha (21st Dec 2024)
The Odia Wikimedians User Group organized a special celebration on 21st December 2024 to celebrate Malayalam Wikipedia's 22nd birthday during the Indic Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 held in Bhubaneswar from December 20th-22th, 2024. The cake was ceremoniously cut by members of the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group, and Ranjithsiji spoke about the journey and milestones of Malayalam Wikipedia. The UG extends heartfelt thanks to the Odia Wikimedians for their thoughtful gesture.

# Thrissur, Kerala (28th Dec 2024)
The celebration of Malayalam Wikipedia's anniversary was conducted during WikiConference Kerala 2024, with a special birthday celebration on 28th December 2024. The event was held at the College of Climate Change and Environmental Science, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. The event brought together Malayalam Wikimedia community members, contributors, and enthusiasts to commemorate the achievements and impact of Malayalam Wikipedia.
Activities during 2025
International Mother Language Day 2025 Datathon (21st-28th Feb 2025)
UG Supported organizing International Mother Language Day 2025 Datathon in Wikidata. The Datathon was organized by Wiki Project India on Wikidata. The event focused on enhancing language-related content on Wikidata, resulting in 2.89K new descriptions, 2.53K new labels, and improvements to 4.85K unique items.
Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in India (1st Feb - 31st Mar 2025)
UG supported the Wiki Loves Folklore and Feminism and Folklore activites in India and celebrated the cultural diversity from around the World through Wikimedia projects collaborating with various communities in India. Several events were organised in various parts of Kerala by the members as part of this campaign. Feminism and Folklore writing contest was organized in Malayalam Wikipedia. Wikimedia Folklore Workshop at the Kerala Museum as part of the follow up activity of Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in India.
# Wiki Loves Folklore Workshop 2025 Kannur (15th Mar 2025)

The Wiki Loves Folklore Workshop 2025 was successfully held on 15 March 2025 at the Kerala Folklore Academy in Kannur. Organized by Wikimedians of Kerala and coordinated by Manoj K. and Shagil Kannur. The workshop aimed to document and preserve Kerala’s rich cultural heritage through Wikimedia projects. Participants made significant contributions across multiple Wikimedia platforms. A total of 378 new articles were created and 4430 files are uploaded into Wikimedia commons.
There was an hands on training happened on uploading media into Wikimedia Commons. Jinoy training the participants on how to improve the folklore items on Wikidata. More than 100 Wikidata items was improved as part of the event. Following the workshop, a photowalk was organized at the Kerala Folklore Academy in Kannur.
Followed up the workshop a photowalk was organised at Kerala Folklore Academy. The photographs were captured by the attendees and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
# Folklore Photo Walks
After the post-workshop, several photowalk was organized to document, Kathivannur Veeran Theyyam at Mambalam, Payyannur, Vayanattu Kulavan, Gulikan and Vishnumurthy Theyyam at Kakkampara, Ettikulam.
Participants captured the vibrant rituals, performances, and cultural elements associated with this traditional Theyyam and later uploaded these media files to Wikimedia Commons. Read more
# Wikimedia Folklore Workshop Kochi 2025 (22nd June 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala UG conducted a one day workshop at Kerala Museum, Kochi on 22 June 2025. This unique initiative aims to bridge the gap between digital knowledge sharing and the preservation of cultural heritage, offering participants a hands-on experience in documenting and contributing to the Wikimedia projects. 14 people participated in this event. This was a follow up activity of Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in India. 60 existing articles were updated, and a total of ~4k edits were made.
Open Data Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about open data and encouraging its use across various domains. The User group supports the Open Data initiatives and supported various events this year.
# Open Data Days 2025 at Digital University Kerala (22nd Mar 2025)
Open Data Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about open data and encouraging its use across various domains. Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a one day workshop about Open data at Digital University Kerala (DUK), Thiruvananthapuram. In this workshop UG organized various talks about how open data can be utilized to understand and mitigate complex challenges such as poverty, inequality, conflict, climate change, and disaster response.
# Open Data Days 2025 (1st-15th Mar 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala UG supported the Open Data Days Datathon in Wikidata along with Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation and Datameet. This online event aims to enhance and improve data in Wikidata by engaging contributors in structured data editing, enrichment, and linking efforts. Participants will collaborate to expand and refine open datasets, aligning with this year’s theme, 'Open Data to Tackle the Polycrisis'. 15 people signed up work the event and contributed in this data-a-thon.
Wikisource Data Workshop 2025, Thrissur (18th-21st Apr 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala organized a 2 day Wikisource summit and a 2 day Wikisource data workshop at Kerala Sahithya Academy, Thrissur. A hands-on training program for the general public, led by volunteers from the Wikisource community was organized as a part of this workshop. The session explained the tools, workflows, and processes used in Malayalam Wikisource. An open data workshop focusing on connecting Wikisource more efficiently with Wikidata. Participants will explore data linking, metadata enrichment, and automation tools in Wikisource. Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized this workshop in collaboration with Open Data Kerala, Wikidata India, KOHA Kerala Community, Tamil Wikisource community. 13 people participated in this workshop.
Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in India (1st Jun - 31st Jul 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala UG have organised Wiki Loves Earth, international photographic campaign to promote natural heritage sites around the world through Wikimedia projects in India. The marked the return of this international photography competition to India after an eight-year break. 9,614 photographs are uploaded into Wikimedia commons and 1359 people contributed into this campaign.
9 members from the UG was part of the organising team. Over two months, the campaign attracted 1,360+ contributors, with 92% of them being first-time contributors to Wikimedia Commons.
Wiki Loves Onam 2025 (17th Aug -30th Sept 2025)
Wiki Loves Onam 2025 campaign was designed as a global initiative to capture and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and festive spirit of Onam, one of the most significant festivals celebrated by the Malayali communities. This campaign invites contributors from around the world to participate by documenting the diverse traditions, unique rituals, and vibrant festivities associated with Onam, contributing both visual and textual content to enrich Wikimedia's repositories.
Participants are encouraged to submit photographs they have taken and descriptive content that highlight the variety of Onam celebrations—from the iconic Pookalam (floral decorations) to the grandeur of Vallamkali (boat races), the delicious Onasadya (feast), and various other regional customs. The goal is to create a comprehensive and diverse visual documentation of Onam, showcasing its regional variations and the cultural significance it holds for Malayali communities worldwide.
This year 27 participated and 445 images got uploaded into Wikimedia Commons.
Wikivoyage Workshops and Photowalks
# Wikivoyage Workshop 2025 Coimbatore (21st-22nd Mar 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala in collaboration with Tamil Wikimedians organized a Wikivoyage workshop at GRD College Coimbatore. This event is focused on revitalizing and expanding the Tamil WikiVoyage. Our goal is to boost participation and enrich existing pages with valuable content. Students from Dr. G R Damodharan College of Science, Peelamedu, Coimbatore and other Wikimedians in Coimbatore participated in this workshop. Rangan Datta from West Bengal led the workshop about Wikivoyage.
# Wikivoyage Workshop 2025 Palakkad (23rd-24th Mar 2025)
Followed up that we have organized a Wikivoyage workshop at Palakkad. This event is focused on revitalizing and expanding the Malayalam WikiVoyage. Our goal is to boost participation and enrich existing pages with valuable content, as well as fill in any missing information. Rangan Datta from West Bengal led the workshop about Wikivoyage. 9 people participated in the workshop and 12 articles edited in Incubator.
Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized a photowalk and workshop at Malamel tourism, Kollam on 12,13th April 2025. This event was focused on adding more photographs into Wikimedia commons and introduce Wikivoyage to the participants. 10 people participated in this workshop. The photowalk associated with it covered 5 different places in Kollam
## Amaramkavu, Kolani, Thodupuzha
Amaramkavu is the largest sacred grove in the Idukki district, Kerala. The forest is rich in plants and trees native to the Western Ghats. Many trees such as Thambakam, Eetti, Pala, Marotti, Madakka, Jati, and Anjili can be found here. Amaramkavu has an area near to 3 acres and is rich in biodiversity.
## Uravappara, Thodupuzha
Uravappara is a large rock formation situated in Olamattom near Thodupuzha in Idukki district. It is situated at a height of 500 ft (150 m) above mean sea level. Uravappara Temple is situated over the top of this rock formation. Three big boulders can be seen atop of the rocks and they are situated at one end of this formation. There is a pond in this area with clear water.
## Malamel Eco Tourism
Malamel Para (Malamel Rock), is a hilltop located in the Pathanapuram Taluk of the Kollam district in Kerala. It is a cluster of massive hillocks and rocky terrains that offer acts as a bridge between the coastal plains and the high-altitude Western Ghats, harboring species rarely found elsewhere. The site is composed of several distinct hillocks like Kudappara, Golandarappara, Ayiravallippara etc.
## Jatayu Earth's Center, Chadayamangalam
Jatayu Nature Park is a tourism centre at Chadayamangalam in Kollam district of Kerala, India. It stands at an altitude of 350 m (1,150 ft) above mean sea level.
## Vattathil Waterfalls, Kalladathanni
Vattathil Waterfall is a waterfall situated in Ithikkara River at Kalladathanni. The river is flowing throught the Village Ithikkara. This village is situated 15 km from the port of Kollam. In this waterfall the water flows to different steps and finaly landing in a flat plain.
Wikipedia Workshops
Wikipedia Workshop Kasargod 2025 (20th Sept 2025)
A 1-day workshop in Wikimedia projects organized at ASAP Community Skill Park, Vidyanagar, Kasaragod. The workshop introduced major Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons to participants. This event included sessions on how to edit Wikipedia, starting a new article in Wikipedia, uploading files to Wikimedia Commons and add category to files. 15 students from FOSS club, LBS Engineering college, Kasargod participated in this workshop. Vijayanrajapuram led the workshop sessions.
A one day workshop in Wikimedia projects organized at Gudam, Kozhikode. City heritage organized this workshop in collaboration with Gudam. The workshop introduced major Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons to participants. 15 people participated in this workshop. Ranjithsiji from the UF led this workshop. Zuhairsirius talked about modern trends in Wikipedia.
Edit-a-thons
- Feminism and Folklore 2025 - As a part of Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 Wikimedians of Kerala organized a writing contest in Malayalam Wikipedia. 37 Articles contribued by 4 Editors
- Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 - Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign from 1st July 2025 to 31st August 2025. 14 people participated in this campaign and 543 pictures are added into Malayalam Wikipedia.
Other Museum Photowalks
The Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a photowalk at the Kerala Folklore Museum in Thevara, aiming to document the sculptures and artifacts displayed in the museum. The event aimed to capture and preserve the rich cultural heritage showcased at the museum.

Other Datathons and Photowalks
Wikimedians of Kerala User Group was organized a photowalk and Workshop at Indigenous Mango Fest, Thrissur 2025, associated with IMCP (Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project)The main objective of this event was to document 1400 different varieties of Mango species displayed in this festival. A data workshop was organized after the photowalk. A brief documentation was made regarding how to document various mango species in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons with structured data. 4 people from the UG participated in the event.

Wikimania 2025 (6th–9th Aug 2025)
Members of our user group had the privilege of attending Wikimania 2025, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in person. The event provided an invaluable opportunity for collaboration and learning, bringing together Wikimedians from across the globe. Notably, fix of our esteemed members, User:Akbarali, User:Athulvis User:Gnoeee, User:Manojk User:Netha Hussain and User:Ranjithsiji were awarded individual scholarships from WMF to attend the event.
Members of our user group actively participated in various sessions, delivered talks, presented posters, and contributed to the hackathon at Wikimania. Netha conducted a demonstration session titled "An overview of the tools and workflows for mapping knowledge gaps on Wikipedia" and was also part of the organizing team for the WikiWomen's Lunch at Wikimania. Athul, Jinoy, and Ranjith presented posters highlighting Wiki Loves Onam, Wikimedians of Kerala UG activities, and Open Data Kerala, showcasing the diverse projects and community initiatives led by our group.

Jinoy was the member of Programming review working group, where he played the role in reviewing submissions, ensuring alignment with the priorities set by the core team.
Their active presence not only strengthened our group’s representation at Wikimania 2025 but also enabled meaningful engagement in discussions, networking, and knowledge exchange with other contributors, thereby further enriching the Wikimedia movement.
WikiCredCon 2025(14th-16th Feb 2025)
WikiCredCon (Feb 14-16) happened in San Francisco. User: Netha Hussain was an organizer of the event, and participated in the event. She presented a workshop of mapping knowledge gaps related to women's health.
Wikisource Conference 2025 (14th-16th Feb 2025)

Wikisource Conference 2025 was held in Bali, Indonesia. Our user group member Manoj, participated in the conference, representing the community in these global discussions and learning from sessions on community growth, technical workflows, and heritage preservation, which will be valuable for strengthening local Wikisource and related projects.
Tech Events
Wikimedia Technology Summit 2024 (4th-5th Oct 2024)
Members of our user group attended the Wikimedia Technology Summit 2024, held in Hyderabad, India, in person. The event provided an excellent platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and showcasing the diverse work happening within the Wikimedia ecosystem. Manoj Karingamadathil delivered an inspiring talk titled "Inspiring Change: Open Data Kerala," highlighting the impact of open-data initiatives in Kerala. Ranjithsiji conducted an engaging demonstration on "Tools and Gadgets for Editing Wikipedia, Commons, and Wikidata," offering participants hands-on insights into useful workflows and editing tools. Jinoy Tom Jacob led an OpenRefine Workshop focused on "Working with wikitext and structured data on Wikimedia Commons," guiding participants through practical steps on data cleaning, batch editing, and integration with Wikimedia platforms.
India FOSS 2025 (20th-21st Sept 2025)
Wikimedians of Kerala UG was a community partner during the India FOSS 2025, which is the 5th edition of the Free and Open Source Software conference by the FOSS United community. Like last year, this year also the User Group will host a booth during the conference. The booth aims to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects, engage with participants, and encourage new contributors to join community activities. User group members, Athul, Jinoy and Ranjith attended the event and encourage participants to engage in community activities.
Hackathons
Indic Wikimedia Hackathon 2024 (20th-22nd Dec)

Members of our user group, including Athul, Jinoy, and Ranjith actively participated in the Indic Wikimedia Hackathon held at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The event held from December 20th to 22nd, brought together developers, technical contributors, and community members from across India to collaborate on tools, scripts, workflows, and innovative solutions that support the Wikimedia ecosystem.
Wikimedia Hackathon 2025 ( 2nd-4th May)
Members of our user group participated the Wikimedia Technology Summit 2024, held in Istanbul, Turkey, in person. Akbarali, Jinoy, Manoj, and Ranjith participated in the three-day hackathon. They engaged in technical sessions, explored new tool ideas, and networked with fellow contributors from different Wikimedia communities. Their involvement strengthened our group's presence in the global technical ecosystem and opened opportunities for collaboration on future technical initiatives.
Other Activities
WikiConference India 2025 Bid (20th Oct 2024)
When the city selection process for WikiConference India 2025 was opened, inviting communities to express interest in hosting the event, the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group submitted a proposal to organize the conference. Following initial discussions within the User Group members, Kochi was proposed and subsequently selected as the host city through the selection process.
Wikimedians of Kerala User Group along with the Odia Wikimedians User Group submitted an Expression of Interest to host Wikimania in India. This initiative was born out after an initial conversation focused on exploring the possibility of bringing the Wikimedia movement's premier conference to South Asia followed with a Open Community Call on Jan15th 2025. The initial conversation before the submission of this EOI was done on the meta page inviting contributors to share their thoughts on the suggested proposal, emphasizing the need for regional collaboration and shared ownership of this initiative. After this conversions a proposal was drafted and submitted at Wikimania-wiki on 27th Jan 2025. The proposal highlighted India’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, strong Wikimedia community presence, and strategic geographic accessibility as key strengths, and initiated an inclusive consultation process with contributors and affiliates across the region to build a community-driven bid.
Orientation Call for Malayalam Community: Wikimania 2025 (1st Dec 2024)
User Group organized an online orientation session to support Malayalam community members in applying for Wikimania 2025 scholarships. Six participants joined to discuss application tips and hear experiences from past scholars, aiming to encourage Malayalam community representation at Wikimania. The event fostered knowledge sharing and community encouragement for scholarship applicants.
Public Domain Day 2025 (Jan 1st 2025)
On International Public Domain Day, a significant milestone was achieved as renowned scientist and thinker Dr. M. P. Parameswaran consented to release his complete literary works under a free license. The initial batch of books was officially handed over to the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group, with digitization currently underway in partnership with the Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation under People Science Achieve India. It will be preserved and made freely accessible to the public on Wikimedia Commons and Malayalam Wikisource.

The user group conducts a monthly online call on each month. These meetings serve as a platform to discuss ongoing and upcoming activities, share updates, and exchange experiences and insights from community members

After each monthly call, we share updates on the discussions held, along with information about upcoming and past events. Since January 2024, the newsletter has been shared on the talk pages of everyone who signed up, as well as through social media and mailing lists. During this reporting year, 12 newsletters have been published and shared on the Village Pump and user's talk pages.
