This is Wikimedians of Kerala UG's twelfth newsletter.

User group news
  • On Jan 25th 2025, we had our user groups monthly meeting held online at Google meet platfrom. 15 participants attended the meeting.
    • User:Ranjithsiji shared the updates about the grant utilization for the Wikimedians of Kerala UG activities.
    • Shared the updates about WCK 2024 tha was organised on 28th Dec. Shared update about the discussions happened in the UG's AGM and published report.
    • Shared the updates about WCI 2025 that will be organised at Kochi in 2025. Shared the dicussion happened during UG's AGM meeting held on 28th Dec.
    • The My Village 2024 Edit-a-thon has been organised in Malayalam Wikipedia. 114 articles was created.
    • Shared update about Wiki Loves Birds India 2024 campaign. Preliminary judgement has been completed. and final judging process going on.
    • User:Gnoeee shared updates about UG's initial discusssion about hosting Wikimania 2027 in India. Wikimania never happened in South Asia. So UG has taken initative to start the discussion and to submit the bid. The bid has been submitted on Wikimania portal on 27th Jan 2025.
    • User:Akbarali shared update about Wiki Loves Ramadan campaign. Erfan and Muhammed Yaseen shared their interest in taking up the initiative. (Read more...)

  • On 22nd Feb 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Jinoy shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. Thirteen members attended the meeting.
    • Jinoy & Manoj shared updates about Wiki Conference India 2025.
    • Jinoy shared updates about Wiki Loves Folklore photography campaign, Feminism and Folklore Edit a thon in Malayalam Wikipedia.
    • Manoj shared updates about Wikisource workshop at Kannur and plans to celebrate Malayalam Source anniversary celebration.
    • Akhilan shared about about Padayani documentaion project. Articles has been created in Malayalam wiki and documented.
    • Jinoy shared the news about workshop and photowalk in association with Wiki Loves Folklore at Kannur.
    • Jinoy and Manoj shared updates on behalf of the user group about the submitted bid proposal to bring Wikimania to India, the first ever Wikimania in South Asia.
    • Manoj shared the updates about submiting the Annual grant proposal for next cycle for organising UG.activities and asked community members inputs.
    • Kannan shared his plans to release the works under CC licence of an author and asked the community support.
    • Adarsh shared his work on WP:Category project and inviting people to particpate. (read more...)

  • On 29th Mar 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Jinoy shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. Nineteen members attended the UG meeting.
    • Jinoy shared updates about Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in India campaign which received over 30k images.
      • Jinoy shared updates about the workshop and photowalk focusing on Theyyam organized at Kannur as part of WLF campaign.
    • Jinoy shared the updates about the holding of WikiConference India 2025 due to FCRA issues faced by CIS.
    • Jinoy shared the updates about the sessions organised during Open Data Days 2025 at Digital University Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about documenting Mudiyettu, Thiruvathirakali, and visiting museums for potential collaborations.
    • Ranjithsiji & Manoj shared updates about progress on the Wikivoyage Malayalam. Two workshops were held; more contributors are encouraged to participate. Planning to take out of Incubator in another 3 months.
      • Suggestions made to translate and adapt article skeleton templates for Wikivoyage Malayalam.
    • Akhilan reported documentation of 10 festivals, including 5 Padayani-related ones with 1.5k images.
    • Manoj shared plans to organise Wikisource Community Meetup on April 19 and 20th.
    • Ranjithsiji shared the plans of upcoming campaigns include Wiki Loves Earth India and Wiki Loves Onam 2025, gathering of Wiki Women in Kerala and finalizing UG strategy plans.
    • Jinoy shared the updates of discussions happened with Grant admin regarding this behalf of the UG.
    • Ranjithsiji shared plans to have training on small technical tools and increased technical capacity building was proposed.
      • Jinoy shared the past activities done during the time of pandemic and discussed about kick starting it again.
    • Adarsh shared the concerns raised over IP vandalism on Malayalam Wikimedia projects and discussed it. (read more...)

  • On 26th Apr 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Jinoy shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. Sixteen members attended the UG meeting.
    • Manojk shared updates about Wikisource Workshop conducted at Kerala Sahitya Academy, Thrissur.
    • As part of the event, prototying of Wikisource evaluation tool was done and it will be released soon.
    • Jinoy shared updates about evaluation of images populated as part of Wiki Loves Folklore program. Final results are yet to be published.
    • Jinoy shared updates on the scanner provided by CIS to the UG. Currently it is under the custody of Tony Nirappathu.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about Wikivoyage workshops conducted in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Discussion about collaboration with Tamil Wiki was also discussed.
    • Jinoy shared updates on WikiConference India 2025 and the possibility of postponing the same to 2026.
    • Shagil raised concerns about improvement of articles generated as part of Wiki Loves Folklore.
    • Vis M shared updates about Dart2Corpus which is now released under CC license.

  • On 24th May 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Ranjithsiji shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. Fourteen members attended the UG meeting.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about enabling WikiFunctions in Malayalam Wiktionary on 27 May.
    • Jinoy shared updates about Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in India. The results are expected to be announced by June last week.
    • Ranjithsiji shared plans to conduct Wiki Loves Earth campaign in India this year.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates on WikiConference India 2025 that it is postponed to next year.
    • Adithya shared inputs on the map issue raised during the previous call. Issue is yet to be resolved.
    • Ranjithsiji shared inputs on mass IP vandalism currently happening in Malayalam Wikipedia.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates that Manojk is in discussion with Kole Birders Kerala to have their photos uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in CC-by-SA license.
    • UG members, Ranjithsiji, Manoj, Jinoy and Akbarali attended Wikimedia Hackathon 2025 organized at Isthanbul.
    • Ranjithsiji shared thoughts on having a new frontpage for Wikivoyage once it goes live.
    • Irshad shared queries on missing admin action in Malayalam wiki when users with 3 vandalized edits are made.
    • Ranjithsiji explained about the draft namespace we are currently having in mlwiki and about an improved policy wherein article can be moved as SD once article is moved to main namespace without needed changes. (read more...)

  • Ranjithsiji shared plans on conducting a 3 month workshop on Wiki related tools at GRD College using the grant submitted by Bhuvana Meenakshi.
  • Kannan Shanmugham shared that he along with Akhilan will be conducting basics of Wikipedia for Kollam Press club.
  • The new Charts extension has been enabled and can be used on every Wikimedia projects. (... more tech updates)
  • A hackathon is planned to be organised at Kochi from July 25-27, 2025 by IMDUG. The application deadline is June 14. Visit the Meta-Wiki page for details and to apply.

User group updates
  • On 28th June 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Jinoy shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. Eleven members attended the UG meeting.
    • Jinoy shared updates about Wiki Loves Folklore. The results of the event was announced yesterday. Shared the thanks note to each commiunity members for their support in organising the activity
    • Jinoy shared updates about Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 (WPWP) event and shared the plans about conducting a regional level program in association with WPWP.
    • Manoj shared updates about Wiki Loves Earth in India competition. Around 4000 photos have been uploaded during the time of call and Manoj shared plans to socialize by sending mails on the same for better reach.
    • Jinoy shared that, following an email from IMUG on June 5, 2025, requesting support and mentorship for a hackathon in Kochi (July 25–27, 2025), the update was communicated through community channels and included in the June newsletter. During this call, he invited inputs from UG members.
    • Shaji shared updates on his work related to a template to store books in pdf format.
    • Manoj and Arya shared information about plans related to Ayurveda in Wikimedia projects.(read more...)

This is Wikimedians of Kerala UG's eighteenth newsletter.

User group updates
  • On 26th July 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Jinoy shared the agenda of the meeting and welcomed everyone. 13 members attended the UG meeting.
    • Shared the update about the eligibility of UG to take part in the shortlisting process for the WMF Board of Trustees 2025 Election. Jinoy has been nominated as the group’s representative voter.
    • Updates on the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) 2025 campaign on Malayalam Wikipedia. Hashtag #WPWPINKL is using to track the contributions.
    • Ranjithsiji shared that Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in India is being organized again after 2017, with international team support.
    • Jinoy shared the idea of organising the Wiki Loves Onam 2025 campaign this year with the support of UG members and the community. Plans include a longer campaign, improving Onam-related articles and media files.
    • User group members will be participating in Wikimania 2025 at Nairobi. Four posters (UG + individual) from Kerala are selected. Feedback from last year on proper image licensing has been addressed.
    • New member of UG, Kamarudheenelankur shared about the plan to take photos of bus stops at Malappuram and uploads to Commons.
    • Members suggested forming a review committee for handling UG assets. Jinoy shared that a discussion will be started on the criteria for using UG assets.
    • Akbarali suggested preparing reports in Malayalam. Volunteers are welcome to help with translations.(read more...)

Updates / Discussions
  • On 23rd August 2025, we had our user group monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Sixteen members attended the UG meeting. Jinoy shared the agenda for the meeting and welcomed everyone to the meeting.
    • Ranjithsiji initiated discussions on the need to apply for the Annual General Support Fund (GSF). The deadline for submission is 5th September 2025.
    • Ranjith, Manoj, Jinoy, Tony shared the update about the received. Members emphasized finalizing pending support reports before proceeding with the new application.
    • Jinoy presented a draft policy for handling User Group assets. Members are invited to provide feedback and suggestions on the talk page or on the document.
    • Updates on ongoing campaigns Wiki Loves Onam 2025 and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 were shared.
    • Ranjithsiji announced that the proposal for WikiConference India 2026 will be submitted in September and plans are underway to organize WikiConference Kerala in December 2025.
    • Vijayan V K proposed starting a campaign to create school articles from SchoolWiki to Malayalam Wikipedia, with a focus on uploading at least one photo for each school.
    • Participants (Manoj, Ranjith, Jinoy and Akbarali who participated the meeting) who attended Wikimania 2025 shared their experiences.
    • Discussions also touched upon issues in Malayalam Wiktionary’s IPA module, possible solutions for Commons uploads.
    • Vis M, Tony and other members discussed possible tools and workflows to ease bulk uploads to Wikimedia Commons, including Google Drive integrations.(read more...)

  • On 27th September 2025, we held our user group’s monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Eighteen members attended the meeting. The agenda for the meeting was shared, and everyone was welcomed.
    • Ranjithsiji shared updates about the support request by the UG and the annual plan published on Meta-Wiki.
    • Irvin and Manoj shared plans for organizing Wiki Loves Birds this year. More updates will be shared soon.
    • Jinoy shared updates on the ongoing campaigns — Wiki Loves Onam 2025 and Wiki Loves Schools — supported by the UG. More than 400 images have been uploaded for both WLO and WLS campaigns.
    • Jinoy shared about the past Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 campaign on Malayalam Wikipedia, which was also supported by the UG. Twelve participants contributed to over 100 Wikimedia projects during this period, with more than 500 media files added.
    • Athul shared plans for documenting Navarathri programs and invited others to join the initiative.
    • Athul, Jinoy, and Ranjith shared updates and experiences from attending IndiaFOSS 2025 in Bangalore, where they managed a Wikimedians of Kerala stall to raise awareness about Wikimedia projects. (Read more...)

This is the Wikimedians of Kerala UG's 23rd newsletter.

User group news
  • In the month of December, we did not have an online meeting as we held our AGM.
  • On 5–6th December 2025, a Wikimedia Technical Workshop was conducted at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally, Kottayam.
  • On 15–16th December 2025, a Wikimedia Technical Workshop was conducted at Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth - Global Campus, Piravom.
    • 50 students participated in this event and received training on the Wikimedia technical ecosystem. The students worked on fixing issues and developing tools, which they presented on the last day of the event.
    • User:Athulvis, User:Gnoeee, and User:Ranjithsiji from the UG attended as mentors.
  • 980 contributions were made to the Wiki Loves Museums initiative from 20 November to 31 December 2025.
  • On 20th December 2025, WikiConference Kerala 2025 was organised at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration, Thrissur.
    • The 23rd Birthday Celebration of Malayalam Wikipedia was held during this time.
    • 90+ participants attended the WCK and its sessions.
  • This month, we held our 4th Annual General Body Meeting (AGBM) at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration on 21st December 2025.
