Wikimedians of Kerala/Events/Kerala university wikimedia workshop 2018/Report
Kerala University Wikimedia workshop 2018 was conducted from 16th December 2018 to 19th December 2018 at Sophisticated Instrumentation and Computation Center (SICC), Karyavattom Campus, Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. This was a four-day training workshop for Postgraduate students and research scholars at Malayalam Department in Kerala University. The event was organized as a part of The National workshop on Malayalam Computing. The event was organized by Wikimedians of Kerala User Group and Malayalam Department, Kerala University as a part of The National workshop on Malayalam Computing.
In this workshop, we introduced all Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikisource, Commons, Wikiquote) and their working to the students. The workshop contains hands-on editing session on Malayalam Wikipedia, Malayalam Wikisource, Wikidata and Commons.
The workshop started with an introduction to Wikipedia, Wikimedia and other projects. Dr. Sheeb M Kuriyan welcomed the Wikimedians of Kerala team for conducting the workshop. After that the introductory talk was given by Mujeeb Rahman K. After the introductory session User account was created for all the participants in the workshop. Teachers and students from the Malayalam department assisted in the process of creating user accounts. Different internet connections are used to bypass the limit. Most of the students are created their user account from their Android phones. Wikipedia mobile app is introduced to the participants.
The second day started with the structure of an article in Wikipedia. Kannan VM explained how to add references and different formatting options of wikitext. Participants created a new article about places near their home. All the articles are added into the project "Ente Gramam" in Malayalam Wikipedia.
On the third day, the main focus was given to Wikisource. Ambady Anand S explained about how to add a book in Wikisource and important things to consider when typing old Malayalam Script in Wikisource. Malayalam Book Gadyalathika is digitized on Malayalam Wikisource by participants.
On the fourth day, Ranjithsiji introduced Wikidata to the participants. Hands-On training in Wikidata followed after that. Ranjithsiji explained on Lexemes in Wikidata to participants. After that participants added Malayalam Lexemes into Wikidata. 49 new Malayalam Lexemes are added into Wikidata. Sreekanth R expressed the vote of thanks at the end of the workshop.
