From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This is the annual report of the Wikimedians of Slovakia User Group for the year 2020. The year a bit more difficult due to the global pandemic but it also brought interesting challenges and situations.

Annual General Meeting[edit]

The Annual General Meeting took place on 1 February 2020 in Bratislava (in person).

Organisational[edit]

During 2020 we have continued in the consolidations of inner processes and communication. Monthly (and often more frequent) online meetings were key.

Activities of the Organization[edit]

In the year 2020, the User Group organized or co-organized the following projects:

WikiJar CEE 2020[edit]

In 2020 WMSK organized the fourth iteration of the international competition CEE Spring 2020, the goal of which was to increase the quality and the number of articles about Central and Eastern Europe on Wikipedia. During the involvement of the Slovak Wikipedia, between 21 March and 31 May 2020, 11 editors took part. They created a total of 136 articles, 114 of those were accepted according to the rules of the competition. 24 of them were created in an independent category concerning women of the region. Three editors for each of the category received prizes from Wikimedians of Slovakia. We thank Dávidi Štefan, Lukáš Mikulec, editor OJJ a Radoslava Semanová for their work.

Wiki Loves Monuments[edit]

The eight iteration of the interational photographic competition Wiki Loves Monuments took place in Slovakia. 1092 photographs were uploaded as part of the competition, more than in the previous year. Our expert jury selected 10 winners that moved to the international level of WLM. We thank Radoslava Semanová, Patrik Kunec and Braňo Valach for organizating WLM from WMSK. We also thank Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic and the jury members: Alena Čiffáryová, Patrik Guldan, Gabriel Kosmály, Patrik Kunec and Branislav Valach.

WikiGap 2020[edit]

The first editathon WikiGap on Slovak Wikipedia took place in November 2020. A workshop of editing Wikipedia took place on the online platform Zoom. 10 people took part in the activity including 4 new editors. 12 new articles were started, some of them were later deleted, however. We learned valuable lessons during the organization of the event. The main organizer for WMSK was Matej Grochal. We also thank the Embassy of Sweden to Slovakia and the feminist organization Záujmové združenie žien Aspekt for cooperation.

Wiki Asian Month[edit]

Wiki Asian Month took place during November and December 2020. It was the third iteration of the competition. This international competition focuses on the betterment of content about Asia on Wikipedia. It usually lasts one month, from 1 November until 30 November but this year was moved until 31 December. The participation was slightly lower than in the previous year: 7 editors took part in 2020, 3 of them new. 41 articles were added as a result of the competition, 34 were accepted according to the rules. The first three editors received prizes from Wikimedians of Slovakia. The organizers were Dávid Štefan a Matej Grochal.

International Cooperation[edit]

There was no Wikimania this year. The CEE meeting was done in an online form and Matej Grochal represented WMSK. He also took part in various online meetings regarding the Strategy or suggested changes in the Wikimedia Foundation system.

Cooperation with Other Organizations[edit]

During the year we have established contacts with several organizations with similar goals in order to start (closer) cooperation. There is a plan to keep working with the Embassy of Sweden and Záujmové združenie žien Aspekt. We keep negotiating common projects with libraries and other organizations.
