Overview

From Their Righteous Words Campaign: organized by Wikimedia UAE and Wikimedians of Kuwait to bridge the knowledge gap about female companions of the Prophet on Wikiquote. The campaign aims to create new pages and document the sayings of underrepresented female companions who played prominent roles in Islamic history.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance women's representation in knowledge as part of the 2025 Celebrate Women initiative.

Campaign Highlights

What We Did:

Our mission was to increase women’s visibility on Wikimedia projects while incorporating a theme related to Ramadan. This led us to focus on the female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Although most of these companions have Wikipedia articles, our research revealed that Arabic Wikiquote had very few articles about them, and those that existed were outdated and lacked sufficient information.

We began by curating a list of 27 female companions and identifying six articles to edit and expand. Initially, we kept the list short because we were uncertain about achieving our goal, given the low activity on Arabic Wikiquote and the limited number of active editors. However, we were pleasantly surprised when 14 enthusiastic editors joined the effort. They managed to complete the initial list within just three days, prompting us to add more names. By the end of the campaign, a total of 48 new articles and 157 quotes had been added.
